It was a day like any other, on my way to work... running slightly late and
trying not to go too fast... on my ETS.
Not even a mile away from my work place I saw in the rear view mirror a
police car with lights on and slown down making way. Soon I got they were
after me. Here you go, I thought to myself, they saw me speeding and I
didn't even realize I was...
So on, stopped and addressed to the nearest comfortable place to stop. The
copper asked the usual questions about the scooter and my license, where I
live and so on. Then he asked if I had insurance to which I promply replied
off course I have. Not exactly was he was thinking, his computer said I do
not have a policy in place. So I explained I actually have 4 scooters and
they are definitely all insured and on the same policy which expires in no
less than 2 months time. They quickly got checking all the other number
plates and they are nowhere to be seen with a policy.
Adamant that I HAVE insured my scooters I told them the name of the company
I used (Post Office). The copper phones his people and they reply the Post
Office does not do motorbike insurance... so I prayed them to give the post
office insurance number a call to prove them wrong. Somehow they've got
through to the wrong person at the post office call center and she told them
the Post Office does not do motorbike insurance. I was not looking good to
them. They started to write my penalty ticket and phoned the station to
organize the seizure of my bike. I insisted and insisted I have a policy but
to no avail.
I was able to get my wife on the phone(incidentally she works at the post
office) and she got me "the right number", I gave to the copper and finally
my words were proved. I have a policy in place! Relief! For me and the
coppers!
We had a quick chat and carried on with our lives...
Now, what really happened.
Yes, I have a policy with four Vespas on.
One is the main bike and the other three are additional bikes.
A couple of months ago I sold the main bike but never canceled it off the
policy, it would have cost me £20 maybe to get £25 back, so I thought
"what's the point".
When the coppers checked that number plate on the database it obviously
shown with the new owner details even though the insurance in my name is
still in place.
The other three bikes do not show.
When a policy is taken on, apparently, only the main vehicle details are
passed to the police. Which is quite disturbing considering if I was stopped
at 3 o'clock at night (that's when I normally come back from work) I
wouldn't have stood a chance and my vespa would have taken away, ok, I have
a policy so the fine would have been scrapped... but leaving me stranded in
the middle of nowhere in the middle of the night and with the headache of
having to prove my policy to the police and going to pick up the bike god
knows where..
Just to say, check with your insurers what the score is, I have spent a good
hour not knowing if it was really happening or it was only a bad dream.
Surely I now will carry my policy with me...
