Is it beneficial on a vespa engine (kitted or not) to have the "deck gap" (piston top edge to cylinder top edge) , reduced to absolute zero. Lets say you have a gap of 0.61 -1.00 thou , then would reducing this thru barrel base skimming be detramental to engine performance or noticeable performance wise? Probably should have pm'd OZ with this one really

I move barrels 'up and down' by machining, or different base and head gaskets, to get the port timing and squish right. First thing to do is make sure the piston clears the exhaust port by machining base or fitting gasket(s), then set the squish. I like to have the piston flush with the top of the cylinder, then set squish by machining the head or by gasket.
