hi fellow vespa riders i'm relatively new to scoots, about 2 yrs. i have a px125 disc and want to get some extra acceleration (don't care about top end as i live in london so just want to be more competitve in the lights to lights race). i only have about a ton to spend otherwise i might as well buy a 200. also, exhausts that are listed as "off road only" eg, poilni's...does this mean they would fail the MOT? all suggestions appreciated.

If you've only got a oner to spend, there's not an awful lot you can do. As far as exhausts for that price are concerned, the Simonini is the best value at about £70, but you won't see much difference in performance, just a smarter noise.
Putting a kit on your engine will probably be outside your budget by the time you add together all the extra expense that comes with it. I suppose you could look into fitting a T5 fourth gear, but that's more for top end and won't really help you between the traffic lights.
You could sell your PX, add the cash to your oner and get a T5, a Gilera Runner or an Italjet Dragster. Or a cheaper option would be to put some top quality 2 stroke in.

I don't agree with Spence about the Simonini exhaust:) I had one and changed it to polini. Less noise same power...better quality metal as well. The Simonini fell apart after a year:(
There is not much you can do for acceleration. An easy mod and would cost less than a ton, would be a lightened flywheel. Two options here, either get the one u already have lightened or get an HP4. I've been told that with the HP4 because its about 3/4 lighter the timing gets a bit messed up, so for example u won't be able to move in 3rd gear in low speeds. I have one but have not yet tried it.
I would suggest u go for the lightened flywheel with the one u have. Will cost u about £30 to get it lightened.

Interesting to note the difference of opinion between the simmioni and polini exhausts . I myself am looking for a bit more speed from my PX125E (top end) , it is totally standard at the moment (apart from a loe vinci exhaust) but that is on it's way out so I was considering investing in a polini exhaust and polini 180 kit . Has anybody got any knowledge of this set up ? is it any good? and will I have to upgrade the carb?
Cheers .

more top end needs more cc's for the px125 (eg: malossi) . I ran an HP4 on my p2 and it does improve acceleration but doesn't have the same braking effect of the standard flywheel and your lights run dimmer. Go for the previous option mentioned of hving the standard wheel lightened or get hold of pkxl flywheel which is a nice halfway measure between standard and hp4. I had an et3 flywheel lightened by beedspeed and it only cost £12.
Or the no money option is to knock the iron leccy start ring off the flywheel ( if it is leccy start).
I'd knock the ring off and get it lightened, !

How do you lighten the flywheel? I'm asking because I should be able to get it done in work . Do you machine the inside down or do you drill holes in it to reduce the weight ?
I've tried to find out how heavy a HP4 flywheel is but have had no luck , does anybody fancy putting theirs on the kitchen scales !!?? I would not want to take too much or too little off and am too tight to buy a new one !
