I read somewhere, admittedly some time ago that L-plate riders (without the full category A licence) can ride EITHER a bike up to 125cc OR one that produces less than 12bhp. So with a '63 150cc Vespa producing around 6bhp these can be ridden by CBT-only holders on L-plates. Can anyone clarify whether this law still applies, or in fact has ever applied? Or did I dream it? Seems a shame to restore one when I can't actually ride it without spending another £800 on a Direct Access course

i was always under the impression that it went on bhp, so interested to see if anyone knows the answer

If that was the case you'd be able to ride a 200 on L's as they kick out around 12Bhp. The laws an ass IMO.. An idiot on a 30/33 bhp 125cc motorcycle can kill themselves at 75mph but a scooter rider can't at 60 on a P2? A mates(dare i mention it here!!)TS1 puts out about 21bhp! So we could all have P210's and TS1's on L plates!! Rant over....

It was a dream mate You don't need to do the direct access course, just take the 'light' test on a 125 bike, T5 or a LML and you can ride anything up to 33 PS (IIRC) which covers every scooter you could possibly wish to ride..

It's up to 23kw for 2 years after passing the Restricted Access test Bryn, don't know what that is in HP.

I believe that works out to 33 bhp. The instructor who tested me said that with cbt & L-plates, you can ride a max 125 but if you take & pass your A2, you can ride anything up to 33 bhp(which would cover any scooter)for 2 years, then after 2 years you can ride anything you want.

It basically limits you to 125 or under for all eternity I think, blimey If you're going to the trouble of doing the test it would be daft to do the light one I reckon as you'd have to do it all over again if you ever wanted to go for something more powerful. Who know's what hoops they will come up with in years to come 'n all. Renting or lending a qualifying scoot (there's plenty of debate on what these are!) or doing it on a 125 motorbike are your best options really.

It's been a couple of years since I took mine, but as said above, I think the 'light' just restricts you for 2 years, that's all, and you are restricted to 33PS, so if all you ever want to ride is scooters, little point in the extra cost of Direct Access and taking your test on a 600cc bike...

If, by the 'light' test, you're referring to an A1, then if you take that test you'll be limited to a 125cc maximum forever or until you pass a proper grown-up test.
The A1 is the only test you can take on a scooter, unless you take it on a T5 or an LML125, in which case you can take a Restricted Access (A2) Test. If you pass a this test, you are restricted to any bike of 23kw or less for two years (basically any scooter, or a 125cc motorbike). After that two years is up, you can ride anything you like.
As has been mentioned, you can either find someone willing to lend you a T5 or an LML for your test, go to Tommy Bee's and borrow one of his, or just stop mincing about and pass your test on a motorbike.

One thing that anyone yet to take a test should seriously take into consideration:
The A1 (light), A2 (restricted access) and DAS (direct access) tests are IDENTICAL IN EVERY RESPECT in terms of what you have to do in the test, and none of them currently involve anything that you won't have covered in CBT - the only difference is the size of machine you take each test on. The moped test is also identical, just a little slower!
As Spence says, there's no good reason for a scooterist not to take the test on a T5/LML which at least means you'll be good to go on any bike of any size after 2 years.
