A while back, I was riding home and the scoot suddenly started coughing and spluttering. I checked the plug and found a speck of what I assume to be carbon in the plug gap. A bit of emery cloth later and all was well. I asked my mate and was told this is a phenomenon called 'whiskering'. Riding home from the Liverpool rideout on Sunday, same thing happened, this only 3 or 4 hundred miles since last time. I ride a standard PX200 with a Simonini pipe on, upjetted to a 118. I use Selenia fully synthetic 2-stroke and the plug was a dark chocolate brown colour after a good dual carriageway run. My question is, am I running too rich and should I return to a standard jet? The jet was recommended by the dealer when I bought the pipe, but if it's too rich will it do any harm to go back down? Or should I put up with this happening occasionally and have peace of mind that I'm not going to sieze? All advice gratefully received.

allright rob sorry to hear about the trouble on way home
i know everyone says about upjetting to a 118 with a differnt pipe but ive always run a 116 with my pipe i tried last year going to scarbrough running a 118 and it felt a bit sluggish as if it was running rich so im back to a 116 and ive never changed my plug is always a nice light brown saying that the plug is a piaggio been there from new lol....getting on now for 11 years old lol
still runs as sweet as a nut as you may of noticed on sunday lol

had this problem years ago with a pk that hadnt run for while and was run on mineral based oil before i had it . i de coked the head and used full synthetic and never had any problems after that . i assume its just miniscule flakes of carbon coming loose in the cylinder and while 9999 of them will exit through the exhaust port the other 1 will manage to wedge itself across the plug contacts. so it might be worth a wee look at the barrel and head for carbon build up before altering jet size or mixture

Thanks fellas. The first thing I've done is change the plug as I've been told that it might have been a dodgy plug gap. (it never happened before this plug was in?) I'll run it for a while before I take the head off for a peep in. I've also been talking to a mate who has done 20,000 miles on a P2 with a Simonini on the standard jet with no problems, which ties in with what you say Mickey. I'll check the plug again after a few runs and then if it's still dark brown I'll change the jet back to the standard. And yes I did see you go flying past a few times on Sunday Mickey. Looking good mate
