Today I have been discussing with my AFSC chums the issue of using the Humber Bridge on the way to Whitby next week. We are lead to believe that there is a fee of £1.20 for crossing this bridge on a scooter.
There are numerous bridges and tunnels around the country that see the benefit of cutting down on traffic volume and waiting times, and allow scooters and motorbikes to pass through toll-free. The Dartford crossing and the Mersey tunnel are just two that I can think of off the top of my head.
I think it's disgusting that there are still short-sighted authorities out there that make 2-wheeled riders stop and struggle with change when it would be beneficial to all parties to encourage their use by allowing them to pass free of charge.
For that reason, a large party of us that will be using the Humber Bridge next Friday will stop at the toll booths and one by one, will dismount, take our gloves and helmets off, produce a bank note and request a receipt with our change, before replacing helmets and gloves, remounting and driving through.
We will not be doing anything illegal, but hope to prove a point to petty-minded, money grabbing bureaucrats, that charging scooterists for toll crossings is counterproductive. Did I mention earlier that bikes are not charged at Dartford? They were originally, but a mass bikers' protest exactly like this one made them see sense.
If anyone else going to Whitby on Friday will be crossing the Humber Bridge, I encourage you to join us. However, if you know of any other toll that charges bikes, anywhere, feel free to name and shame them here on this thread.
I've already mentioned the Humber Bridge, so I will start by naming and shaming the most pathetic toll bridge I've ever come across (literally): the Dunham Bridge on the A57 near Worksop that, last time I passed through on my way to Skegness, charged us TEN PENCE. Yes, made us stop and remove our gloves to fumble around in our pockets for TEN PENCE. Pathetic.
Let's start it here. No more toll charges for scooters or motorbikes.
