Hello everyone, my name is Jon, i have just managed to find this site after searching and am glad i have as there appears to be a lot of useful information on here. Basically i have just spent a week in italy, noticing the abundance of scooters over there and have grown very frond very quickly of the Vespa. I don't know a great deal about them but am quite handy with tools (just finished building a car) so am looking for a challenge. I notice the prices seem to be quite high (in the £1k mark) and don't want a mint or post restoration model so am looking for a run down old 125 or 200 in need of restoration or work. I will consider anything including parts so i can build one up so would be most grateful if someone could tell me where to start and what sort of costs i can be looking at. Am located very close to Brighton if that helps Many thanks Jon

Hi Jon, welcome to the forum.
As good a place to start as any, is to get yourself a copy of Scootering magazine (if you haven't already). You will find the Scooter Trader section which will give you some idea as to dealers in your area, and there is a good parts for sale section also. It's up to you who you trust, but personally I would approach ebay with caution. I prefer to buy any parts from either fellow scooterists or from my local long established dealer, sometimes it's worth spending a couple of quid extra from a face you know for the peace of mind. They are also handy for any questions you may have. There is also the knowledge that you are supporting somebody you might need someday. Some even give you free tea.
Best of luck. Rob

Cool, thanks for that. I did notice it the other day in the newsagents but didn't think to look in there.
What sort of price am i looking to pay for a pre-resto 125 for example? I want something to go to work on but also to enjoy the weekends without the hassle of spending loads on a full bike test.

It all depends on how much work you want. Personally I'm not Mr Tooltime, but if you want to put the work in, you should pick up a PX125 or T5 (125 also but faster) for £500 to £800 (I am happy to stand corrected if anybody says differently) If you've just finished building a car, you should find parts quite cheap and the project relatively easy to complete.

The other thing I'd recommend Jon, especially as you live near Brighton and there's plenty to choose from, try meeting up with people from a local club.
They'll always know of someone with a scooter for sale and they're also a great source of "I've got a couple of those grommets in a jar in my garage you can have" type statements.

Welcome to the forum , Scooter wise I'd suggest a T5 as a good first one, you can also take your test on that.. Buget £700 - £1200 should see you with something nice and usable to mint! Or if you perfer the older style, you should find a 60's/70's classic in that budget, maybe needing a bit of work..
