Hello! I'm very new to any form of motorised transport... im 20 but dont even have a provisional license anyway i never really 'clicked' with cars when all my mates started driving, but i always thought scooters were cool. I just remember as a kid seeing large groups in hastings, and im quite into reggae, ska etc and it seems scooter rallies get all the good music?!! Anyway i thought i'd ask here as this seems one of the most active and friendlist forums... I would love to own a scooter, but i dont even have a license as i say. So im just wondering what people did when they were in my position? I'm thinking get the provis, do my cbt, then buy a 125cc scooter? i'd love a vespa, and ride that with L plates while trying to afford lessons and passing, getting my license...then in 2 years i could go for a px200 or somthing nippier? Am i deluding myself with that plan or is it sensible? I raring to go asap but i doubt i'll afford it until after uni which is 2 years away... i'll be 22 by then. also me mam is well against the idea so i think i'll wait til i've completely flown the nest if you know what i mean apologies if this was too long, in the wrong place or cos i'm not a scoot rider im not allowed, but oneday i hope to be riding with you, haha! Chhers!

get your provisional. you'll need one regardless of which mode of transport you opt for. go and do the cbt. it's well worth it even even if it is jusat to get some road sense: gives you all the basic saftey tips and advice. see if there's a scooter club near you and ask around there for advice etc. Having said that, this forum is fab for advice too. Loads of people of all ages and experiences only too happy to help. well worth keeping intouch here. (does that endorsement get me some brownie points Spence and Lucia?? lol)

Hullo and welcome. Yes, like Mod says, get the provisional sorted ... you are going to need this whatever you end up doing. Your plan sounds pretty much spot on to me. When you come to actually buying a scoot .... If you're trying to save a few quid (well, a fair bit more than that!) you are probably best buying a relatively recent 2nd hand PX125, especially if you'd be looking to upgrade to a 200 shortly after anyway. There are some bargains out there, E-Bay can give you a rough idea of price but they generally seem to be a bit over priced on there ... buy a copy of scootering magazine and check the scoot trading section in there ... always loads of well priced PX125s knocking about. My Mam also wasn't to keen on me getting one .... I flew the nest a fair whack ago though so that wasn't really an issue What area are you in?

Hello Mark. Just to let you know, at your age and with a provisional license, a CBT is obligatory, not optional.
You might want to try taking some training and a CBT at a riding school on one of their twist and gos before investing a wad of cash on a PX, just in case. But of course you're welcome to sit in on the forum here in the meantime. Have a browse through the old threads, there's plenty of newbie advice been posted.

cheers for all the replies! i have been thinking that i may not wait until after my degree, because the new test comes into effect next year doesnt it? i've heard thats harder... Spence, i would do that, but it might cost alot to train on a auto scoot and the test centers bike? thats why i thought maybe i'd buy my own... ...but, i found a riding school near me in leeds that actually has i think a 125 vespa for people who want the license for scoots not motorbikes! sounds ideal! i messaged the guy, i might see about the CBT course early next year, don't tell me mam though

Sounds like Tommy Bee to me, I've just had a few lessons with him. I would recommend him, though I'd specify that you want to use the Vespa PX125 he has as he also has a LML125 which I found to be completely bobbins and although scooters aren't overly sturdy in general I didn't feel safe on it at all. He also has a Vespa T5 but that's out of commission at the moment, pity, I was looking forward to a play on that ... will no doubt be sorted when you come to do it though.

i think it was him yep! sounds good. I'm gonna talk to me dad and see what he reckons, i dont want to upset my mum but end of the day im not a child anymore, and its not asif im a mummys boy... but still, noone wants their folks to be upset! my main argument now will be the newer test coming in... we shall see.

My advice to you Mark is to tell your mother you're going to get a f**k off big tattoo, then riding a scooter will be the last of her worries.
