Well i'd like in advance, i'm a complete novice and may say quite a lot of stuff that is daft. But you don't get anywhere without asking questions and being called daft is just part of life!
Basically, I have always wanted a vespa scoot since a young age, but never had the time, money, know how to do it.
Now it seems I have the time and money, just need the know how.
I am really looking for a project to get stuck into, a project which will be a steeeeeeeep learning curve.
A I am a complete novice, I don't really want to spend too much, as more than likely I will break everything and waste a lot of money.
I want to buy a scooter which needs a fair bit of work doing to it, as I will then be able to learn as i go along. Don't worry I have no expectations of being able to get to grips with it in any near future, but I see it as an ongoing, possibly quite frustrating hobby!
Anyway I was wondering wether anyone could suggest how much I could get away with initially spending on a whacked out old vespa to call my own? With the idea to spend quite a bit on fixing it up!
Cheers,
Mike

Hi Mike and welcome,
I was in a similar position to you a few months ago and I am now deep in the middle of a project. The only difference being I have done it all before, but it was 20 years ago.
ebay is quite good for older, in need of attention Vespas.
What is your licence situation, do you have full or provisional bike entitlement? That makes quite a difference in what to look for, because obviously if you don't have a full licence you can only, legally, ride up to a 125.
If you are on a provisional, I would recommend a T5 125, you will always find one or two on ebay or advertised elsewhere, Scootering magazine is also good for project scooters. Also check the for sale section of this forum, you never know there might be a suitable Scooter for sale right here.
As for asking daft questions, don't worry about that, I do it all the time, and the guys (and girls) on the forum just come up trumps all the time. Whatever you want to do, you can guarantee someone on here has done it before and is prepared to give you tips.
Best of luck.

That is the same age as my first Vespa, looks great to me. Will be a lot of work but well worth it in the end, if you have the time patience and funds. Depending on the price of course, I personally wouldn't pay any more than about £300 for it.

im not sure what to say really judging by the floor there could be a serious frame rusting problem which wouldnt be good because you would basically be buying a engine and scrapping the frame before you even think of bidding ask him to take some pictures of underneath the scoot, the engine is probably mechanically sound if its a px engine but the frame is in a sad state

Thanks folkes!
Didn't get it in the end, partly because i forgot to bid! and partly because i'm going to do a bit more research. I've found a book called 'How to restore and maintain your Vespa', which appears to be quite good, think i'm going to give that a read and get a Haynes manual before I jump in at the deep end!
Thanks ever so much for your help so far!
Also apologies, when I read back through my posts i didn't make much sense, think I must have been off with the fairies when I wrote them!
Cheers!

Makes me laugh how many ebay ads for Vespa use the description 'Douglas', I mean any Vespa after 1960 something has 8ugger all to do with Douglas and who would search on Ebay for a Douglas rather than a Vespa anyway? Oops, welcome to the forum Smoke

Do they? I've never noticed that, bizzzzzzzzzzzar I've still never heard anyone ever refer to a Vespa as a Douglas or seen any ref to Douglas on any dealers web site, often listed as Piaggio/Vespa thou which makes more sense
