Hello mate. A good place to start (apart from here obviously) is www.scootertrader.com because even if there aren't any scooters for sale near you, you can at least get a more realistic idea of price ranges than you can on Ebay.

Welcome to the forum, hope you find it useful Have you been to any dealers to look at ET's? if you don't mind paying a bit extra for piece of mind, worth seeing what dealers you have locally..

Thanks again for the welcome guys, bryno i went to one dealer originally to see a Piaggio Zip it was nice and all but i've really always wanted a Vespa, they said they might be getting in an LX but they weren’t entirely sure, they don't get many 2nd hand Vespas in, i don't know of any other dealers around here.

HI Fuzzyduck , Big greetings. Ive just joined this great forum myself, and on the search for a classic vespa, just missed out on a 80s model 125cc in my town,it was slightly scruffy, but solid and all there with current Mot,£475 and i missed out by a couple of hours (SHUCKS) but the search goes on! I See what you mean about the availability on ebay, but they always seem to be quite a distance away. Good luck with your search mate......nigel.

Have you looking in 'Scootering' magazine? - the Scooter Trader section in there is ok, sometimes people advertise the same scoots in ebay too though.

Hey fuzzyduck, I purchased classic scooterist scene today, had a good look in the classifieds. The only one nearest to you was a 200cc Lammy chopper in N wales,I know thats not what u want, all the others!.... A vespa px 125 in somerset and then most othrs in the midlands upwards,no ET 50s ,soz mate, keep searching thats what iam doing. I must say however do take Lucias advice about buying scooter mags, mate i ve gained a lot of info today . Loads of vespa dealers ,spares, websites , a good site to go on is Trickys scooter club website ,they have a history section of all the vespa models from the late 40s upwards .Hang on just spotted a pk50 with 110 kit ,says that the engine dont run and is a bit of a rat? £300 but west yorks...... nigel.

Nice one - I like the Scooterist Scene mag, but Scootering has more for sale I think, and it has small photos of the scoots as well. I think the next one out is 22 March in the shops. I should be earning a commission

Hi fuzzyduck,It looks very tidy. I dont know much about modern vespas,Is she a twist and go,Thats what iam riding at present, until i finally purchase a px. Have you taken your CBT if you dont mind me asking,I did mine on a twist and go scooter, and as yet havent rode a geared machine on the road, My future vespa PX should be fun to get used too i hope!..Good advice is to take the CBT before you purchase a scoot, to get the proper and professional feel, and i do appolagise if you already have done so. Also purchasing from ebay does have advantages and disadvantages ,yours not being able to test her out.I sincerely hope you didnt mind me putting my two pennys in, Iam very new to this great scene too. Very best of luck fuzzyduck....... nigel

Tell the flipping mingebag to fork out the whopping 15 QUID to tax it if it's got an MOT. I hate it when a seller says "It'll only cost you £15 to tax it" - YOU bloody tax it then. Stickers will always come off easily if you warm them gently with a hairdryer or hot water. And while I'd be very surprised to find a 4 year old scooter that didn't have some sort of mark on it somewhere, that looks a bad scratch or gouge that's been clumsily repaired with a touch-up kit to me. Having said that, it looks like a reasonably solid machine in good nick.
I would recommend to anyone that hasn't ridden a geared scooter before to try it out before you buy one, as not everyone can do it. I did my CBT on my brand spankers PX125, which was a bit of a gamble, but I was okay. There was a woman there ogling it saying that's what she was going to get as soon as she passed her CBT. Then she found out she couldn't even ride an auto and they sent her home at lunchtime.
And get someone who knows what they're doing to talk you through riding a geared scooter before you even get on one. So many people that have ridden an auto get on a geared scooter for the first time, don't anticipate the huge difference in power, open the clutch and end up on their arse with the scooter wheelieing away from them.
In the scooter world, it's quite common for people to travel long distances to collect scooters. When I was selling my first scooter (in the Wirral), I was contacted by a girl from Bournemouth, a lad from Hull, then three blokes drove over in a van from Leeds and bought it. It was a lad's first scooter and he came with two mates from his local scooter club to help him out. If you see the scooter that's perfect for you, no matter where it is, take someone that knows about scooters with you and have a good look at it before handing your hard earned over.
Caveat emptor as they say.

On L plates for two years ,Iam on my second year with nine months remaining. You can retake the CBT if you wish once expired my work mate has just re took his. But i think most people go for the test ,thats what i will be doing at the end of the year. As far as riding with a car licence ,Erm i cant find my highway code book so not sure, but the CBT is defo a must if you havnt riden a bike (scoot) on the road,I found it good fun on a freezing january morning. We are getting there mate!....nigel

You need to get a bike licence once you've got your cbt. Tho you keep retaking it every two years if you wish, and continue to ride on "L"s. a full car licence no longer counts (only as a provisional for a bike) also i think i'm right in saying that you need to take a bike test on a geared bike/ scooter if you intend to ride a geared one, as a test on an automatic will only enable you to ride an automatic. I did my test on a px, so have an A1 licence, which doesn't bother me . but if you intend to go bigger, take it on a T5 (as mentioned somewhere ubove) or on a geared motorbke.

If you are over 21 and hold a full driving licence (not a bike one) you can jump on a 50cc scooter and go, without L plates. I would however recommend a CBT anyway if you're not used to two wheels on British roads. Thereafter, as has been stated, if you want to ride anything with a bigger engine, a CBT is mandatory. But, if you don't then take a test you have to re-take a CBT every two years. If you don't want to be restricted to a 125cc scooter forever, you'll have to do one of two things: 1. Take your test on a 125cc motorbike (Restricted Access), which limits you to motorcycles of 23kw or less (125cc) for two years after which you can ride anything you like, but allows you to ride a 200cc scooter (because the power output is less than 23kw on a scooter) 2. Take your test on a Vespa T5 or an LML 125, as they are the only two 125cc scooters with sufficient power output to qualify as a pass for an A2 licence. However, make absolutely sure your testing centre knows this before you take the test. Some naturally assume that taking a test on a scooter means an A1 pass, some know about the T5 but not the LML, and if they incorrectly issue you with an A1 pass you'll have a really hard time getting it upgraded. Most motorcycle academies and testing centres aren't fully clued up on the foibles of scooter tests, so if you want good, up-to-the-minute advice try Tommy Bee in Yorkshire, who specialises in scooter instruction and testing: www.tommybee-biketraining.co.uk or 0113 240 0150

Yeah, I got that address straight out of Tommy Bee's ad in Scootering, but it doesn't seem to work. The site might be down for maintenance or something.
