hiya, ive just bought my first vespa - a 1984 pk 50. theres a few things i really do need to know if you good people can help the flywheel cover is really tatty as is the cylinder cowling... those will both be replaced, but mine is the electric start type and the only one i can find is the non electric start type. this isnt a problem as i could take out the starter pinion, then will it fit? there is also a DR 100 kit on it, but the ports are slightly chipped. the man at the local engineer shop says i should get the ports widened a bit, what will this do to the engine? the throttle is a bit stiff and has no return spring. i can turn it either way no problem, but will this fail an MOT? and finaly, will an expansion exhaust increase power by much considering the 100 kit? thanks in advance!

Hi mate, I'm toss at mechanics but I can answer your throttle question. Old models don't tend to have a return spring - certainly ones without indicators, so you can give a right hand signal without losing speed - it won't affect your MOT at all.

mine does have indicators so does this mean it'll fail then?

I'm even less of a mechanic - in fact, not at all. My T5 (1991) is the same as your throttle (and I have indicators too), it won't fail on that.

okay thanks for that ;D
can anyone answer my mechanical issues?]
oh, one more technical thing, sometimes i can get 40mph in 3rd but sometimes i can only get 30. i put this down to inadequate cooling because of the buggered flywheel cover and damaged cowling.. am i right?

A few points.
As far as I'm aware PK flywheel covers are generic although not having owned an ES model I'll happily stand corrected.
Do as your engineer tells you and match the tranfers, all kits need this doing to maxamise their potential and run properly.Don't worry about opening them up as if going back to a standard barrel this will cover up the opened ports anyway.
I would fit a cheap sports pipe such as a Polini or a Leo Vinci with this.If you're intrested I have a brand new NOS Shaft expansion I'd sell for £20 +p&p.
Your differing performance could be a few things.I doubt a kitted 50 on standard gearing would reach 40mph in 3rd at anytime.I'm assuming it's a 4 speed 'box?

yup its 4 speed, the 12v electrics model. the thing is im not sure if its a kit or a 100 engine. i think its a kitted 50, as the head had the words DR stamped in, and the cooling fins were quite small. as was the stroke.

Just checking. ;D Yeah, this'll be it no doubt. Not a bad kit,I used to run them 20 years ago. They kept blowing up though as we just slapped them on and shoved in a bigger main.Revved the tits off them all the time.Poor little buggers. ;D Quite fancy getting a 50 again and doing the max moped thing for a laugh.Polini 50,reed valve etc.Oz,you listening?

However,if someone has a greater or more immanant need I'd part with it for cost. Most cheap spannies will need doing away with the spare wheel on a PK.If you don't want to do this you'll need something like these.

Oven cleaner and rockwool, followed by emery paper and oil. then shine it up with autosol. Wouldn't do any harm to lap it in with some honing paste either

you realy need to lap that cylinder head, a plate of glass with some fine wet and dry and plenty of water. keep turning the head around so your hand is not puttingpressure on the same point, you will see it removes any high spots, keep doing this untill all the sealing face is same mat colour. i used to have a pk50 many years ago infact 1985 that had a dr kit on it, tried loads of various makes of exhausts, all were pretty much the same exept for a polini item, that made a huge difference ;D then the modifying bug began.... the rest is history
