i just happen to have a spare 17.5mm carb (off a gilera dna 50), was wondering, do i have to modify the inlet to get any benefit? i dont mean attaching it to the pipe, i mean will it make any difference with the standard inlet pipe? i feel it needs doing as my pk is being stangles by the tiny standard carb

black smoke is rich running. check the choke, or have you changed the jet, or did it always do this?
also check the spark plug. t tan through chocolate brown is great, anything else is a problem.

yup its 4 speed, the 12v electrics model. the thing is im not sure if its a kit or a 100 engine. i think its a kitted 50, as the head had the words DR stamped in, and the cooling fins were quite small. as was the stroke.

okay thanks for that ;D
can anyone answer my mechanical issues?]
oh, one more technical thing, sometimes i can get 40mph in 3rd but sometimes i can only get 30. i put this down to inadequate cooling because of the buggered flywheel cover and damaged cowling.. am i right?

hiya, ive just bought my first vespa - a 1984 pk 50. theres a few things i really do need to know if you good people can help the flywheel cover is really tatty as is the cylinder cowling... those will both be replaced, but mine is the electric start type and the only one i can find is the non electric start type. this isnt a problem as i could take out the starter pinion, then will it fit? there is also a DR 100 kit on it, but the ports are slightly chipped. the man at the local engineer shop says i should get the ports widened a bit, what will this do to the engine? the throttle is a bit stiff and has no return spring. i can turn it either way no problem, but will this fail an MOT? and finaly, will an expansion exhaust increase power by much considering the 100 kit? thanks in advance!
