I have a 1966 Vespa VBB which has a squealing noise from the engine when under load. It seems to quieten down the faster (on a VBB?) you go. The noise doesnt turn heads or start dogs barking. I have replaced all of the bearings twice, crankshaft, piston, mainshaft, clutch twice. The scoot drives great. So the questions are, are all VBB engines naturally noisy. Is the gearbox always clunky and like guess the gear? It has had a new cruciform and cables which are adjust ok. It is after all only 57 years old.

Is it definitely the engine?? Could it be a knackered top rear suspension mount??

Hello there. Regarding gear clunk. when going into first keep engine revs low. I always push scoot forward as I put into gear it helps take up the snatch.there is no syncro on gears but you can double the clutch when changing down fourth to third and third to second and this will stop gear clunk if you are not sure how to do it ask an older driver or a wagon driver how it works.good luck cheers alan.
