Hi Dave I registered a Vespa 50 Special last month and will be registering my ET3 the next... It's very easy to register an imported scooter. First of all you need to get an age certificate, you can do this either with the Vespa club of britain or the vespa veteran club and it cost £10 if you are a member or £20 if you're not and also get full membership. Than you need a MOT (£23), a british insurance certificate, a form V55/5 and a custom form (VAT 414). The duty payable to DVLA is £50 and you need to add the value of a year road tax: £15 up to 150 and £31 above You can get the full import pack with all the forms needed if you click hereWhen you have all the forms ready you need to send them to your local DVLA office (not to Swansea) In the envelope: - Age certificate -MOT certificate -Insurance certificate -V55/5 Form -VAT414 Form -2 form of ID with address on -A cheque for £50 -A cheque for the value of a year worth of road tax -All original documents you have to speed the process of identifying the vehicle If everything works out you get a number plate certificate and a tax disc in two weeks, followed by the logbook within another two. I hope this helps

I had to take the bike to the issuing office to prove the frame and engine numbers. Got the MOT with the frame number on the certificate and rode to the centre without number plates, quite legally and the long way round. Also avoided the VAT by acting dumb.

Correct, I was told there is a chance they'd call me in to verify the numbers but they didnt in that occasion. 'skrappey wrote:Also avoided the VAT by acting dumb No need to act dumb! If the vehicle was imported from Italy (and the rest of the EU) the vat payable is none, there is no duty to pay, therefore on the vat414 form you just fill in and declare the right amount (zero pounds) has been paid. And for all the other countries... Vespas originally come from Italy..

I'll need to go through this for my VBA.. On the Q or VAT, mine is a Uk scoot, so presume I don't need to fill in a VAT414 form, but do I need to prove it is UK? surely if no proof was required every vespa brought in from Vietnam would be declared as a UK 'barn find' to avoid paying any duty?

Instead of posting the forms, can't i take them to the local office and get them to give me a reg there and then?

I think you can - Spence'll know - he had to go through all that - I'm sure he went to the office in person.

It has to be dealt with through your local office, as they may want to inspect the scooter, they won't process it at Swansea..

Bryno: if it has previously been registered in UK DVLA should have the frame and possibly the engine number still on record therefore you dont need to fill in a vat414 and they will issue you with a new V5.
stevomtb1: Documents can be taken to DVLA local office but it will still take 5 to 7 working days to process your application . I have sent them the first time for the special and taken them in person for the ET3, not a great deal of difference.

^ unfortunatly it's not on the DVLA's system at all, must have been off the road when the went computerised, so I've got to re-apply..

I took a dating certificate, MOT certificate and temp insurance certificate (obtained on the chassis number until a reg number is issued) to my local DVLA office.
When I said I wanted to register an imported scooter, the woman asked me how long it had been in the country, when I said it had sat in someone's cellar since 1969, she said not to mention the import part again and we just registered it.
When going to your DVLA office, make sure you have ALL the paperwork you need (details from the DVLA website), your chequebook, and get there EARLY, best on a weekday, or you could be queuing for bloody hours and hours.

Loads of bigger engined scoots were re-reg as 125's when the law changed years ago, then all you had to do was change it on the V5 and they never asked any questions. These days if you try to do that you will be asked for an engineers report or other proof that it is really a 125. Why not just take some lessons and your test? will make you a safer rider and got to be done at sometime, then you can ride any scoot you like..

What about importing a scooter from Guernsey? I'm waiting for the v55/5 to come through the post, but how do you go about insuring a scooter that doesn't have a mainland UK reg number?

Same as importing from anywhere, you can get temp cover using the frame number (in your case also quote the current plate) whilst you are sorting the UK registration.

My registration process has been a bloody nightmare. The Scooter has come from Guernsey (UK) to the mainland (UK) I completed the import pack V55/5 included a new MOT and insurance certificate both issued on the frame number. It was refused by Bournemouth office saying they needed a Certificate of Conformity, usually something only provided with a brand new vehicle coming in from outside the EU. Since then I've gotten a letter of authenticity from Piaggio and that's still not good enough! Looking at a SVA test by VOSA now £75 upwards. All this since Nov last year, never again will I register a vehicle. All thanks to these sodding emissions laws that are slowly killing off our 2 stroke scoots being on the road.

I built a Lambretta last May, using a Spanish frame. Got authentication letter off Lambretta Club, insurance and m.o.t on frame number, and went to Chester DVLA office with these and V55. Dressed smart, and acted soft ( not hard ! ), and walked out with reg number and tax disc. Did not fill in or need tax forms or import papers. I think if you look dubious, they may ask to see scoot. Get there early, it gets busy.

Although Guernsey is in the EU, if the vehicle was first registered there it has no conformity, therefore a certificate is needed. It's another MOT basically but more so. Just say it's a factory model and not a special, shouldn't be a problem. VAT will be payable because it wasn't when imported into Guernsey, that's the way they do things. I had the same with a bike from Guernsey into the IOM. See the thread on it elsewhere.
