Over the 41 years I've loved Vespa, I have often wondered why I bother, from the sh*t (Russian?) Steel used on the body's of the Rally 200 range ect,to the paint on PX scoots in the 1980's and 1990's ( a quick dust over the headset bottom, no paint on inner toolbox ect, ect),to bad finishing on the headset bottom casting and the later PX (after 2001?) With its sh*t engine cases and onto lack of rust proofing (PX front mudguard, anyone?) , Then on to sh*t rustproofing of the GTS range etc, and they are still at it 👇. scooterlab.uk/suffering-corrosion-let-sdoc-sluk-help-news/Mij😉

Hey Mij I am sure you can find more flaws than that! You forgot to mention using the same basic design for over 50 years without significant updates, even LML went to 4 stroke! However if it was updated and constantly improved it would be like saying a brand new Mini is as stylish as a proper Mini from the 60`s and it just isn`t. My view at least.

I'll have you know Mij that my Russian IZH has got to be my best kept machine at the moment, the Russians tend to have two build qualities, like a tank and like a turd. My IZH is tanklike.... 😁 The worst one is the Harley/Cagiva, but then we're back on that 'not built for this climate'... Total b*ll*cks. You buy it, you use it, you abuse it, it wears. Build, ride, improve, repeat.

The problem with improvements is it changes the shape eventually There comes a time when you should change the name Mk1 Escort ,,,mk6 Escort Just give it a different name,As they completely changed the shape

The mark 1 Escort is technically not the first to take the Escort name. It was a 100E which looks like a van, but was all windows, there was the Anglia, the Squire, the Thames 300E, the Prefect, and the Escort. Anyway.... But I do agree with the whole radical model change and no new name, reckon it's why I went Vespa all those years ago.

It's the taking the p*sh with the lack of quality control, that has always p*shed me right off ☺. Love the design and (most of😉) mechanics of a geared Vespa .

This may be a bit controversial, and I hope I don`t get barred from this site, but I have a scooter, plastic, moulded, and automatic! shock horror. It is a Gilera runner 2 stroke 180cc and although it doesn`t look like a style icon, it rides great, quick, stable, good brakes and decent handling and still has that great 2 stroke sound and smell, this is made by Piaggio and is probably part of the natural scooter evolution but still not really made for our winter weather and there are plenty that have rotted through the frame. Maybe Piaggio don`t want them to last forever.

I would have a 2 stroke 180 Runner and a 2 stroke 180 Dragster , if I had the space and cash, so please don't give a flying feck, about anyone's negative opinions on here or anywhere else! I don't ( unless they are a distraction in a serious thread ,I did this to sime66 on here, not long after I first joined and didn't handle his rebuke too well at the time, sorry Simon and also pxguru, who is also known as jack221 on other forums, I apologize to you both, for being a dick, hope you can see I've learned since I first joined this forum, which was my first ever forum.) Jim. You have as much right to your opinion and to be here, as any of us 😉. Jim☺

Ooooh, a dragster...... would be nice, but I don't think I could live with myself owning one... I'm still trying to get over owning a 4 stroke machine, let alone anything from 'the Darkside'....😆

My old man. I knew nothing about scoots when I bought my iron sloth, I was told to get a parka and big fox tail whippy aerial.... Well I knew no better, so I spent £50 on the worst jacket I have ever worn (was a 1950s fishtail too) and buggered off for a spin. The dam thing tried to open up like a sodding parachute, was absolutely horrible... Never did get the aerial... 😅

I think that may be the same dodgy steel was used by Fiat,Lancia and Alfa, even if you are going to use cheap or low quality steel, a decent coat of rust protection would of helped, back in the day a vehicles built in UK also had rust problems!

Ian History has it as a batch of cheap dodgy steel from Russia and I believe you're correct Ian, about the Italian car companies using the same steel, was even worse than the UK made vehicles, if you can believe that!!, Alfa Sud , anyone !!! The story I heard was that the open market price of steel went up considerably, and as a lot of workers in Italy were employed in the automotive industry there was a worry that as the cost of the finished product increased considerably, then the automotive industry which was largely government backed (like British Leyland) would see a big drop in sales and therefore a high risk of redundancy. The fix for this was to buy cheap Russian steel, however western countries were not meant to trade with Russia as they were apparently our enemy, only certain products in limited amounts could be bought/sold with Russia. So allegedly the Italian government did a hush hush deal to buy the cheap steel and moved it onto home producers of vehicles, unaware of the poor quality. Have you ever heard of the saying "if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is" Obviously Piaggio had not! Still does not excuse them for taking the p*sh, and after getting caught out all those years ago with corrosion issues, you would think that they would make sure there were never any corrosion issues in the future, by using quality rust proofing coatings, I know I would.
All the best for 2019 folks

You don't hear about many people polishing their Lancia Beta do you.... The reason why the Fiat 500 had a canvas roof was so they kept the steel usage down! Love it....

My mates dad had a Lancia Beta - it looked like a really cool car when new. It literally rusted before his eyes over a period of about 6 months and it leaked so much it was like a paddling pool in the footwells and boot! Ha - he could afford it though as he owned the local newsagents and earned a packet whilst everyone at the time was just scraping by (early 1980s).
