Fitted a new auto lube pipe. Cannot believe what a struggle I am having refitting the fuel tank. It is fouling on the back somewhere. There are a few electrical cables at the bottom of the tank cave. Managed to snap the fuel lever trying to get it through the hole in the frame ( new one ordered ). how do we connect the fuel line to the tank without pulling it all off of the carb as there is not enough slack to play with. My first Vespa : ( Fiddley bikes to work on ).

last time i refitted my tank i disconnected the fuel pipe at the carb, and then re-connected it when the tank was correctly positioned. It was a lot of buggering about for what seemed a straight forward job. I struggled to get the fuel lever through the hole in the frame for quite a while.

Thanks Daz. These are a pain to work on sometimes but I am enjoying it. The problem I see or don't see with these, we can't see if the auto lube joints are leaking or if there is a petrol leak. I went out and bought a BIG Chubb fire extinguisher today just in case. Disconnecting the fuel line at the carb looks like a pain as well with the heavy duty fuel line, not easy access ? Regards

Take the fuel line OFF the carb first, then fit the tank, then fit fuel line and oil line to the carb and oil pump.
Fit the tank with it tilted forward, poke a long stick, round file anything that reaches the fuel tap leaver(poke through the air breather hole under the seat, where the seat bolts are) to position the fuel tap lever in/near the fuel tap frame hole, use your stick or what ever to manipulate the tap into the hole WHILE gently pushing on the raised back of the tank.
300 tries later and you,'ll have the technique ๐๐ I've got it down to a few mins, after a lot more than 300 tries.

Similar way, but I tie some string to the fuel tap, then wiggle it through the hole.

i ended up cutting my tank gasket as it was too tight to fit around the tank, I patched up the gap with some 2mm rubber sheet i had spare from a job a did on my other scooter. (that was made in Milano).

Citydaz,Never heard of a tank gasket being too tight before, take it it wasn't a genuine part?
Used the string technique before but prefer the poke it method, myself ( ooh see misses ๐ฑ).

Tank to frame fitting at around 33.34 minutes ๐ tho looks easiest with USA style fuel tap lever hole.
Toystory, the rest of the above video may be of interest. the

Hello the easiest way is how It was fitted in the first place. Put the tank on the floor and build the scooter round it. Now for serious advice. On a PX without auto lube the fuel hose should be 500 mm. With oil tank where the hose loops round the oil tank 600 mm.
Now what I did. Was got a hose 1000 mm long. Stuck the end through the frame and attached the other to the tank. Fitted it and pullled the hose through and cut off 400mm before attaching it to the carb,
I know itโs wasteful but so is kicking the f**k out of a shed door, screaming at the toolbox, throwing a chair through the window etc.

I prefer t**tting it with a branch and screaming, they call it the Basil Fawlty Method... If you have your fuel pipe a little longer, you can feed the extra bit of hose through the hole near the carb with the tank almost out but still connected. I pull it up, give it a quarter turn and stick a piece of wood across the hole. Tank settles, and I can get both hands in without feeling like Ace Ventura escaping from inside the rhino, or the fat handed t**t from Big Train.....

Mijโบ I assumed it was genuine, purchased from a well known german shop?. Now that I know it was wrong i will refit another one when i next take my tank out in the winter to respray it, after a fuel spillage damaged the paint.

Thanks to all the replies, I have had a good day. Got a new petrol tap lever. Disconnected the fuel line at the carb and using the string method eventually it all slotted in like that video one of you posted. Checked for leaks on the oil tank before I fitted it, just stood it in a clean cardboard box for an hour. The old girl started then cut out after about 5 seconds, stripped the carb and cleaned all the jets, still cut out. I blew down the petrol inlet and it was blocked, transpired a bit of Blue Hylomar was blocking the float chamber cover. Jetted that out and it runs lovely. Fitted the brand new genuine Vespa flasher unit and the indicators all work now. Drilled out the two knackered screws in the brake reservoir cover, resprayed the lid and fitted two new posh screws, looks good. The seat catch is now perfect as mentioned somewhere else on here. The only problem I should now sort out, when I went to turn the engine off, it still ran after I took the key out ?? ( A small problem probably ). Anyway I am quite please with myself and will have a few beers with the Mods at the British Legion tonight.
Thanks again for replies.
