When I took off the headset of my sprint I found that a previous owner had used part of a can to packout the bottom of the headset where it joins onto the steering column. The bottom of the headset is just worn out.Is there a better way until I get round to replacing it ?

Not sure how the headset can ever wear out there, once it's on, it's on, nothing moves to wear.
Most likely the forks have been changed at some point and they don't match the headset very well.
Not sure of any better way you can sort in the short term but I would be checking both headset and forks and identify where the mismatch is and replace the offending part.

Could be wrong, think at some point LML did the same thing, using a plastic shim? I have a sheet of very thin metal some where in my shed, that my engineer mate gave me, it's for making shims,it looks like a can cut open. Remember, shims can be used to solve engineering problems, when used properly. My 2cents is, if it works, what's the problem? All the best. J☺

Coke can shims (other brands also available... 😁) have helped me out no end in the past.... Don't rust, and come in loads of different colours...
