Got a '87 T5 classic, 172 malossi, 21t cosa clutch, sip road XL, standard carb with 122 main jet. was on a run on Easter Monday, the run was about 80 miles. At the start I replaced my Cdi unit as there were a few problems with cutting out around 5600 revs. Problem was cured and scoot ran brilliantly until the last 10 miles, I'd been sitting at a constant 50-55 2 up for 5 miles and came to a junction to slow down, I eased the throttle off, the bike seemed to make a bit of a 'burbling' sound as the revs slowed down. The bike then stalled and it took a while to get it going again. When I did I had to keep the revs quite high to prevent stalling and on taking off it needs to be revved quite high. I got home, stripped the carb out ( I've now done it 3 times) and cleaned everything. I got a new plug too. I started the bike and adjusted the idle speed to about 1200 revs, it sounded fine, I pulled the throttle back and revved it and it sounded smooth but if I opened the throttle gently about an eighth and the bike just dies. I can't understand it, it had all the symptoms of a dirty carb or something loose but unfortunately it's not helped. I've tried adjusting the air mix screw for hours too but it makes no difference. Anyone any suggestions? The kit and clutch has only done a few hundred miles and the exhaust about 100. I had fitted a pm tuning Rev counter the night before the run but with the bike running so well for the first 70 miles I doubt the Rev counter is a factor. I'm getting to the end of my tether with it. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Keeko, the first thing that came into my head was a nipped piston ring! as you where two up, had been riding at a constant speed then " eased the throttle off" and I would have run it in with a bigger main jet. You don' t mention your cylinder head?
I would for elimination purposes at least take the exhaust off ( just the stubb if poss) and look at the piston or remove the barrel and have a look.
It's up to you tho, mate.
Hope you get it fixed😉

Thanks for the info, I don't think I've much option but to have a look as nothing else seems to be working, I've just got a 124 main jet this morning, I'll put it in too and see what the results are.

low revs dying , blocked pilot jet ,does it help if chokes pulled . or low compression ,maybe ring problems as jim suggests ,can you get a compression tester ,over 100psi is what you want.hows the scooter at starting , one thing ,never used a pm tacho , but might be worth disconnecting it just to rule out some weird lectrical crap . 122MJ is quite small. Burbling funny on the rpm run down after a long run is usually a sign of over heating.
As suggested; compression check, confirm it starts well from hot, check WOT plug chop again and if all ok put in a new spark plug

Thanks guys. The scooter starts first kick every time and ticks over lovely, there's a new plug in it too.. I use a 122 jet as it came with the malossi kit. I'm gonna try the 124 this afternoon. Compression feels good (although I've no way to test it). Oddly, it does help when the choke is pulled, what would that indicate? Thanks as ever!

It's funny I've had my compression tester from about the mid 1990's , if memory serves!, none of my mates has one and not one member of the last scooter club ( who shall remain nameless😉 ) I was in ( 20+ members) had one! That's why I never say check compression, as I don't expect many people to have one. I think now I'm a member here,I'll have to start advising one!
Keeko, just for reference, what are the rest of your carb jets? and what cylinder head are you using?
Good luck.

Cheers Jim, The remaining jets in the carb are all standard apart from the 122 main that came with the malossi kit. I tried the 124 yesterday and it wouldn't tick over, and just about started, it just sounded wrong (if that makes sense) so I put the 122 back in. ive a standard T5 head that has been machined by chiselspeed to work with the malossi 172 kit..

Keeko, has had it repaired, I'll let him post. I was wrong, I'm glad to say!😁, although think it being an alloy barrel may have saved it. Think we were all on the right track, tho.
All the best.
