So last summer with help from this forum I rebuilt my polini kitted px125 engine as it had siezed on me, I also decided while the engine was out to get the frame and body refurbished so it was back to bare metal. The scooter is a early sixties GL using the PX motor and is all back together now and has an MOT. The engine got new bearings and seals and a clean up of the piston and bore to remove the scuff marks and I was looking for tips on running it in what speeds/throttle openings and for how many miles. help and advice appreciated as ever, and thanks guys as without the help I had received on this forum I wouldn`t have managed it. Ian Not sure if i`ve got photobucket to work right! i1084.photobucket.com/albums/j419/ian_martin40ianmartin40/image_zpsm4qyez2o.jpg

Take it easy, try not to go wide open on the throttle and don't hesitate too much eg don't sir a team the same speed for a long period of time. Change gears a lot and don't WOT on a hill climb. I think the usual mileage is around 500 miles before you can give it WOT for longer periods. I ran my first kitted scooter in this winter, 500 miles took it easy, didn't have any problems after that. Also worth checking the plug during the process of running it in, it should be a chocolate brown colour

a few short 10 minute runs ,allowed to cool before starting again ,not using more than half throttle .after the 1st 50 miles longer runs ,still only half throttle ,dont hold at 1 throttle position or slog engine uphill in 4th .change gears more an generally treat the engine softly. cant remember what caused your seizure last year , have you upjetted at all ,some jet richer for running in an plug chop later to get it better . Once engine was out frame and stripped I discovered that it was fitted with a standard px 125 or 150 base gasket which didn`t cover the transfer ports at the base of the polini barrel so I guess that is what caused my seize, after the seize I did continue to use the scooter till the end of the previous season with the carb upjetted and rich. This was an engine that I bought from gumtree and just bolted in and it went and had done best part of 1k miles before it seized. there is a considerable difference betwen a standard base gasket and one for a kit!

Another back on the road. Lovely looking scooter. If you ever want to sell it be sure to offer it to me A couple of points that from looking at the photos that would make it perfect; Hub nut cover missing, front link cover missing, wrong kickstart for the scooter and the helmet hook is upside down. Take it easy running in and be sure you can feel it splutter as it revs higher.

I tell you what Guru you don`t miss much! I didn`t even notice helmet hook upside down but it was, now sorted, fork link cover now fitted and hub nut cover in chrome in the post, just used a px kickstart as it is px motor and wanted perfect fit on splines but you are correct the older style ones would look better. cheers Ian

No point leaving things unfinished when you have done so much work already!
