Had some issues with tickover this past week. Adjusted idle screw and it would be fine, but the next day it would be back to idling poorly to the point of almost cutting out. When I next went to adjust the idle screw, it looked like it had moved, but I put that down to my old napper going! However, I had cause to adjust it this lunchtime, and when I checked when I got home, it had definitely moved. I assume I need a new screw and spring, but is this a common thing? Do they just 'go'?

a strong spring should keep it in place, considering the threads are all fine.
Check you have the correct screw for the carb Older style carbs, 70's and earlier, had a short round slot head adjusting screw The carbs available nowadays all have the long brass hex head screw.
It maybe worth taking it off and inspecting it closer if you think it's suspect

It maybe worth taking it off and inspecting it closer if you think it's suspect It seemed to be fine when I stripped the carb after the diesel incident. Literally been since last Friday that it's felt off, and the screw had definitely moved between lunchtime and teatime yesterday. I've ordered a new screw and spring, can't do any harm to replace it, but I'll have a look at the old one when changing it. If only to satisfy my own curiosity
