Is there a way to check if the inlet pad is worn or damaged without splitting the casing and how would a damaged pad effect engine performance?

I used to be so preoccupied with inlet sealing pads when I was 30 years younger They don't actually affect performance that much and can run acceptably even when quite knackered. The test is to take the carb off, turn the crank to shut the hole, fill the hole with raw petrol, then count how long it takes the petrol to disappear. Should be 10 seconds or more for really ok. 2 seconds is bad. Less than 2 should be thinking about a reed converion.

Cheers Px, I was also told about using 2 stroke to test it.

Thanks Px, just done a rebuild after replacing the crank, bearings, seals and cosa clutch. Engine is running rough, starts OK but struggles to tick over, severe lack of power going through the gears, like bogging down then you would get a power surge and scoot would take off. I've tried a new cdi, checked the stator reading and a new carb, with no change. Anything else I should check?

Weirdness is usually an air leak in the crankcase somewhere. Did you do a pressure test?

Like H said we have all done it. At least once. As you have been running it like that, the rings might now be slightly ruined. As punishment you should fit a new set.
