loads of people use em ,the cone 1's an foam ones too . mostly without the carb top filter as a "tuning" thing ,would need re-jetting as the amount of air-flows changed . H

But yes you will indeed be sucking in warmer dirtier air from under the side panel, what are you looking to achieve?

Was hoping for a bit more poke and make it look a bit more cool I suppose, but I'm a bit worried about raising the temp in the cylinder.

I'm no tuning expert but I don't think it would make much difference really, bit more air so you can upjet to suit, but the downside being you are sucking warm air and it will pick up all the crap from inside the panel. Be better if you were running with no side panel of course.
There would be much more to gain from either a cylinder kit, a better exhaust or just a bigger carb retaining the standard filter set up

You can go to a 26mm carb then which takes the same filter set up.
Lots of pipes will give you a bit of extra, SIP road 2 seems to be pretty popular choice now.
