my friends px200 has been sat in a room with fuel tank removed since last august and before that sat in bits for another year or so after he got someone to rebuild the engine, we put scooter together last year for a scooter run in millport and noticed at the time how loud the engine was, on friday night the fuel tank went back in to do a charity run in glasgow and quite a few people mentioned the engine noise, one person told my m8 that the main bearing had went, just wondering what you guys think so i have uploaded a video of the engine running.
its difficult to tell with that tractor in the background. Do you live near sime66 by any chance! hahaha actually i can't quite make it out;
could it just be something rubbing on something else as the engine is turning? like, kickstart not quite returning (altho' it looks high enough) or flywheel cover gearing
try turning the flywheel by hand and listen carefully
does it stop when you pull in clutch/ change gear?
take out plug, put pressure on the piston: use something that won't mark the piston crown, and rock the flywheel by hand and check for play
Even with all the noise there is some extra noise. If you are lucky the flywheel is rubbing on the cover or if there is a starter motor it might be stuck in the flywheel cog
I would take the cover off and see what you can find.

Not in a club, have a white1978 p200e with single sports seat and red wheels.
guy who is fixing it phoned my m8 tonight told him his engine was gubbed, said there had been water init and very little gear box oil, so its a rebuild and a expensive one at that. I found out tonight that he kept his engine in the garden last winter, in one of they big metal secure tool storage things.
