Hi , just purchased my first vintage Vespa, having a few problems (surprise surprise) one being I've been told that my compression seems low and could probably do with a rebore and new piston , I'm really not mechanically minded does this sound about right or are there other things I could consider. Does anyone know of any good scooter mechanics in the fareham , Portsmouth areas , cheers

you could send your cylinder to beedspeed for rebore and they would match oversized piston and rings, what size of engine you got?

um, a good mechanic near pompey , well theres tj scooters by allstyles in hilsea . never used him myself . oh an theres me in petersfield . an i know a guy in waterlooville does re-bores ,john from scooter-loopy . has scooter stood a while before/since purchase as it could be something as simple as stuck rings . an for the cost an time of pulling a barrel n sending it off for boring its not much more to just buy new .2 port barrels are pretty cheap ,i might even have a serviceable one in my shed .i usually convert to 3 port barrels were possible an use the old ones as paperweights .for oversize pistons an rings check out "grand sport.de" . there the best around . Thanks for getting back to me every one, it's a Vespa vbb 1964 but the bloke who sold it to me told me it has a sprint 150 engine in it as the vbb engine had no compression but I did take the vbb engine as well. I don't know if it's worth getting the old engine fixed up or getting the sprint one fixed up ??!! I did take it to a garage and asked them to look over her for me but all I can gather is he cleaned the carb and that's about it he's the one that said about the compression, I don't think he could be bothered to be honest!! It is running but he said not to go to far on it ?Also having problems with headlight and horn and front break not working, I was thinking of putting one of those 12v kits on . As you can see not a good start , is this something you could help with Henri or recommend anyone you trust as I've heard indifferent things about tj scooters , being new to this I don't want to be ripped off !! Thanks for your time everyone

yes i can help . an ive heard some funny stuff about tj too , didnt want to say owt as ive no direct experience of his work .but did take a personal dislike to him when i 1st met him ,but then i'm a grumpy beggar . your headlight an horns probably a wiring issue ,does rear light an brake light work . an front brakes probably just adjusting up the cable or new shoes needed . theres not much in it between a vbb an sprint engine really, tho sprints are usually on 10" wheels , unless its a sprint veloce later lump ,there faster more powerful engines .i think if i was you i'd keep pottering around on the sprint engine an re-condition the original engine .then swap them ,that way your scoot will only be off the road for a day .new bearings/seals/gaskets an other parts comes to about £60 . a new 2 port barrel an piston can be got for around 50 .an you'd have a next too brand new engine almost . i usually charge around 50-60 for a strip an re-build on a vbb engine , with a £20 surcharge if i have to clean it 1st,as i hate cleaning engines . i'm in hampshire from thursday noon til sunday morning every week ,if ya want to chat an let me look at ya scoot cover my fuel costs (£5) an i'll pop over some weekend . message me ya phone number n postcode an we'll set it up ok . an just so ya dont worry ,when a tall/skinny/ugly toothless biker pulls up on a large motorbike scaring the neighbours ,thats me .H

Yes the tail and break light are working, they had 12v bulbs in when I got it and they kept blowing so I tried 6v bulbs and that has done the trick for that ,, but as I understand the headlight and horn run off the same coil so that is why I was thinking of getting the 12v kit (new stator and switches) to see if this would do the trick but not knowing what I'm doing i''ll see what you thinks best, cheers

yes,all lights run on same-ish circuit on 6 volts .the horns either a bad connection or busted horn probably . an headlight not working when tail does is probably a dicky switch or bad connection in headset . got ya pm ,is nxt weekend gud for you . H
