I noticed oil around the outside of petrol cap (about half a teaspoon).I wipe it up go for a ride and there it is again. The tank is about half full and not noticing any loss of petrol.is it anything to do with ethanol in petrol seperating the 2stroke oil ??

You're seeing the oil residue after the petrol has evaporated, sounds like you need a new seal on the cap.
If it's a px with autolube, that would be concerning ;-)

you can buy additives to neutralise ethanol ,an even a filter system to remove it entirely . vespas arent really effected by ethanol in fuel ,unless youve got a very old needle valve .the tips get destroyed by ethanol. lambretta owners are reporting burnt pistons an blaming ethanol, but ive noticed the story usually goes "its kitted, stopped at different garage on long run, then canned it to make up time ". so not entirely convinced its all ethanols fault. if scoots stored for 3+months ethanol can give grief tho. its hydroscopic an draws moisture from air , forming little pin-head sized globules of white crystal/fatty things .just perfect size to block jets an carb passages .so if storing/wintering scoot fuel preservatives are a must . This month scootering magazine has a bit of editorial on ethanol shield from Bedlam Scooters so yes it is readily available, check page 20. I think it looks like a good idea and am going to use it this coming season.
