american legislation means ,indicaters from about 1970 ,an horn an parking/running lights are dc from a battery an must work when engines not running .indicaters are red lenses an front brake light switches were mandatory earlier, about 79-80 i think. not sure but dont think california allowed new vespas after about 1980 when there stricter emissions laws came out .all carb/fuel overflows must run into catch-tanks an same with breathers ,no hydro-carbons can be released into the wild sort of deal. almost started first kick then took about 30 minutes to start, took the plug out cleaned it and it eventually started, noticed some fuel in the carb box, gave the carb bolts another half turn, most likely some other issues to sort but i will see how it starts in the morning, i also put a bit extra 2 stroke in with the fuel and im still buzzing.
Well done! Sounds good and solid. Did you check all the gears and clutch work properly? Its running too rich probably the mixture screw or the choke not fully off, which will make it difficult to start if not totally cold. How long before the test ride?

just sitting on the bike put it in first and it pulled away, in my back yard so only drove 10 feet lol, seems to be going through the gears ok although one of my gear cables might need adjusted, very smooth going into gear, my lml lump used to clunk into gear i also need some engine cowlings so i dont burn my cables and fuel line, beedy's were out of stock, i put some extra oil in fuel as i had read some where thats what you do with new rebuilds, i will adjust mixture screw and check choke but i did think the accelerator cable was a bit tight on the carb pully, will mess about today and i have some new cables to fit, btw its snowing here so who knows when i will get a test drive but i plan on just using it in the summer months so will have to break it in pretty quickly in spring time.
Extra 1% oil for the first 200 miles is what I would do.
Can you remind us of the jets in the carb now. 160/BE3/118 main and 55/160 pilot??

thats correct i have pictures somewhere cant remember the idle jet number, something not right with carb, scooter started agter five kicks this morning and i had forgot to pull choke out, i turned it off straight away and left it till this evening, pulled the choke out and scooter started after 4 kicks and i let it tick over foe 20 minutes or so then noticed the card filter was soaking wet with fuel, i will upload the picture
Some of this might be normal. The standard barrel porting causes a lot of back pressure in the crankcase, the result of this is usually called blowback. Everybody has this. Yours might have a bit more if the mixture screw is adjusted wrong, the choke is not closing fully at the carb or it has the wrong pilot jet. Also could be that you have a petrol leak somewhere.
Don't run it too much without the covers on the engine. These are the cooling system and direct air to flow over the barrel and head.

spit backs a constant on those engines ,cant remember working on a p/px200 that didnt have a oily/dirty bottom from fuel leaking out from back of carb box .as pxguru says a rich pilot jet or sticky choke will make it much worse .H

Glad you're in business Doulsy. Few teething problems is nothing to worry about. Get those cowl son though; really does make a difference. Oh, and get you finger out; I saw daffs out, riding home this morning - Springs just around the corner!!!!
cheers guys, i have mixture screw at 1 and a half turns, took the pilot jet out and i think it says 48/160? choke seems to be all the way back and i have checked there is no leak at the fuel line, looks like it is coming up the way as guru and H have said blow back, started on 3rd kick with choke out tonight when i got home from work but i only let it run for a minute, so what you all think of pilot jet size? im going to order the engine cowls tonight from ebay, was holding of because i thought i might need a carb.

replaced this and put some covers on, dont think the jet has made much difference tbh, ice roads up here so i can't even drive the scooter along the road, let the engine tick over for 30 minutes but not much else i can do, eager to see how it go's through the gears, noticed when i held the clutch in there was a slight change in noise.
was out tonight for a ten mile run on the scooter, when up and down gears ok, notice some fuel below the carb box when i got back( that blow back thing again?) also if i left the scooter turned of for 5 minutes it was hard to start, as if it was flooded, from cold it started second kick with choke out. forgot to put the carb box cover on before i went out if that makes a difference but i did remember to connect rear brake
Hi Doulsy Yes the carb box cover and air hose mean you are using the frame under the fuel tank as your airbox, without the carb top on your airbox was all of Scotland! maybe it was a bit too lean without choke on to start. I hope your cleaning is meticulous as my car is covered in salt and road dirt from the grit lorries, and that salt will eat your vespa if you give it a chance!
as ianmartins saying ,a uncovered/hosed carb box will slightly alter your carbs settings/jetting .an can you describe the clutch noise change ,a drop/rise in revs ,or a different engine noise ,whirring/etc . H

Revs dont change, engine sounds the same but i can hear a faint noise when i hold the clutch in, hard to explain the noise, i maybe make a video and see if it picks up the noise
Just the normal clutch noise by the sounds of it. Hold the clutch in and put it in gear. The noise will change again. If so, all normal.

as pxguru says , so long as revs arent changing ,thats a sign of bad clutch bearings/seal. just the noise of plunger on pressure plate an separated plates spinning inside each other ,aswell as gear tree not being directly driven but free wheeling .ya must be having good hearing an paying attention to detail to pick it up , a sign ya build will be successful. have confidence ,mind the ice n give it a test run . proofs in the pudding . Done 60 mile on it at 30mph, so once i hit 100 i can go a bit faster? Half throttle about 45mph? Been mixing fuel 3% been trying to sort out some vibration im getting from headset and other faffing, tried to tighten one of the gear cables today and it snapped so i put a new one on and the wee bit you tighten the cable with snapped, gears seem bang on and im enjoying riding my scooter, big difference from that old knackered lml engine i had in the summer, its like a total different scooter and the fact i restored the scooter was a buzz enough but to have done the engine as well, bodywork is my job but i have absolutly no mechanical knowlage or interest so the engine has been the biggest buzz, could not have done it without the help on the forum because the sausage dvd is not enough on its own, so cheers guys, cyber pints allround on me.
