Hi, All, I'm having a problem finding S-A-E 30 oil for my 1989 PX 200E Acrodaleno motor in the Algarve Portugal. The closest I've come across is S-A-E 30, 4 stroke. Is there any oil on the market that is equivalent to the S-A-E 30 or can I use the S-A-E 30 4 stroke? Thank you.

The Vespa gear is sealed, so being a two stroke doesn't effect the oil requirements for the gear. Yes, you can use the 4 stroke 30 sae oil.

care should be taken as "4stroke engine oil's" and some gear oils can contain detergents and anti foaming agents that are corrosive to yellow metals bronze and brass alloys that are used in vespa engine cases bushings and bearings , also they can effect the operation of the clutch and the cork friction plates they slip too much and burn
look for multi-grade gear oil W75/80 - W75/90 Jasso or Sae API-GL4 should be written somewhere on the label its cheap and readily available its often used in garden equipment
hope this helps

mmm I actually forgot about the clutch plates sharing the gear box oil, although I doubt that slippage can occur in such a small power engine. As for the oil, I didn't know that there are additives that can attack yellow metals. Ill check my oil type as well, thanks.

look for garden centres , lawnmowers mostly use sae30 in there gearboxes aswell , kru251 on here had some success using automatic transmission fluid if i remember right .use the search function an the thread an debate should pop up . i only use sae30 , never EP oils or multigrades an definitely not 4 stroke oils for above reasons.it will ruin ya clutch plates . weird 1 , a flash point of -20 ,but wont pour til at 200 .maybe i'm reading that wrong . thats a EP type ,as in extreme pressure ,as in gears n gearboxes .good shear resistance for contact areas in gears ,not so suitable for clutches ,why its not listed as for limited slip diffs . H

Rudi, It's not suitable for clutches because it doesn't shear so well and causes them to drag when pulled in. Also less oil will be flung up to the crankshaft main bearing, as that 80 oil is heavier. SAE30 lawnmower oil is the one for us (even if it does say 4 stroke SAE30).

But doesn't the SAE refer to the viscosity and not the ingredients in the oil? So as far as I understand it could be SAE with additives. how can I tell?

sae is the basic weight of oil, the additives are what make it EP , sae30 is a basic 30 weight mineral oil without additives ,car n truck clutches run dry so can have additives ,motorcycle n scooter clutches an some lawnmowers run wet clutches .additives give drag in wet clutches an detergents eventually ruin the corks .H

As much as I tried, I couldn't find an sae30 but only a multigrade oil. Will a 15-30w do the job?

Some older manuals says SAE 30 can be mixed in fuel to lubricate the engine, but nowadays better use 2 stroke oils. For gearbox SAE 30 for 4 stroke engines is what you need. At least in my coutry there is no SAE 30 oil for gearboxes. SAE 30 oils for lawnmowers are for 4 stroke engine, as that's what lawnmowers are.
