my mate just got a 200 engine rebuilt that he bought and the guy who rebuilt it also installed it, anyway he took it out today to start breaking the engine in at 30 mph, only did about 4 miles when one of his gear cables came off, when inspecting the cables he came across this take it he is gonna need new casing? edit: btw when he got home he noticed oil on the floor where the scooter was sitting, so he either got it back like this or it happened in transit. he is totally gutted, put a right few quid into it too

that looks suspiciously like its been t**ted with a hammer/punch to split the casing new engine casings no but it would need splitting to be welded up bodgy option is silicone but not ideal i doubt jb epoxy type stuff wont hold because of the bolt does your mate have any photo's of the engine before it was sent away ?
looking at the photo the oil on the floor looks black like 2t oil from an exhaust , try put a sheet of paper under the engine to give some kind of idea where the oil is coming from cables if correctly fitted just don't fall off (makes me think who ever did the job hasn't much experience with geared scooters)

buggeration , if it was mine i think i'd go the "suck it n see" approach , they split there coz the bolt n dowel corrode into the ali .jamming cases together ,a tad worrying you can see side of gasket but theres still gasket/sealing faces inboard the bolt/dowel that should keep oil in . so as above "suck it n see" , check his oil level an run it on the stand til hot over a bit of newspaper after cleaning it . see if any oil manages to weep/drip out from there or if its elsewhere . welding cases is always a gamble ,they need vapour/aqua blasting 1st ,so full strip n new bearings/seals , an as he hasnt got the cracked off bit will have to be built with weld an then machined .not cheap an also theres no 100% guarantee it will work . ive a set of cracked cosa 200 cases i was going to section ,can always carve a lump off an send up to ya . a good welder can then splice what he needs in an save a load of machining later .
