Hi, i'm after some help please.
I am trying to get my mates 67' vespa 50 v5ait going.
I have rebuilt the top end as the starting prob was found to be a knackered piston/barrel/ring missing.
we have replaced the barrel/piston with a big bore from beadspeed (110cc)
When i come to kick it somtimes turns over but a sharp kick results in slipping
Am i right in thinking the kickstart engages throught the clutch to the crank and the slip i am expirencing is the clutch slipping?

kickstart has a quadrant toothed cog leading to a small primary cog and spring, which both sit on the shaft of the clutch bell. Disconnect clutch cable, does it still slip ? If not then cable was too tight or maybe plates goosed/contaminated . If it does still slip then suspect a prob round the aforementioned items. Yor assumptions are completely correct re clutch to crank and kickstart engagement. Hard to say 100% without actually seeing the engine. good luck and don't forget www.smallframes.com for additional tips and help

Cheers for the promp reply, Will try the cable disconnect trick.
after i posted i tried to kick over with the clutch in which proved what i had thought.
I have had it fired up a few time then when my mate went to ride home she kept cutting out, not sure what the prob is.
When i had a look the only thing i could see was that i had fitted the carb gasket wrong way around so it was causing some of the air way to be blocked off. after correcting it now refuses to bump??
Is the std 50 carb ok with the 110 kit? beadspeed say so but the fact it ran with some of the bleed holes covered by the gasket would suggest to me that the mixture is to lean with the holes uncovered.
Thanks
Dave.
PS a performance exhaust is also fitted

Def clutch disconnected cable and still slip.
I checked out smallframes v helpful. i had the fuel/air mix screw only about 3/4 out instead of the 2 1/2 recomended on the smallframes site, just can't check if that was the prob because of the clutch but that seems easy enought to sort.
Cheers
Dave.

once again baz its all speculation, but you need to elimiinate things like blockages, sh*t in the tank , badly routed fuel pipe etc etc. If it is running too lean then i would suspect that more than doubling the cc's and keeping the same pilot jet in the carb would hamper tickover. But you say it was running ok prior to this? Are you getting a healthy spark ?

yeah the spark looks ok to me. i need to spend some more time, maybe strip carb again and get the clutch sorted.
Prob is the wife just started labour with our first so i'll be a bit busy for a while.
Cheers again
Dave
