If it's a VBB its already a 4 speed, VBA was the 3 speed.
I did it on mine, you need the 4 cogs, xmas tree cluster, selector box and hand grip, from memory I also used the VBB's axel/cruciform assembly as well to keep it simple and be sure everything lined up.
Ratio wise IIRC the VBA's 3rd ratio is same as the VBB's 4th so you'll not gain in top end, but it makes it a bit more ridable as a smaller gap between the gears.
You are right to keep the proper motor and 8" :-)

vbb gears ,try bill drake at vespa club uk , allstyles or beedspeed , allstyles do the 8"/10" gs rims aswell ,but on a vbb fork leg an link they will rub under suspension compression on mudguard . H

I bought a set of the GS 10" wheels and a longer stand to fit my VBA.. then promptly sold them again, the VBA looked so right on the 8".
As Henri says the front wheel will hit the guard under braking AND it will not sit right in the mudguard as the angle of the 8" forks is not the same as the 10"..
Even if you fit forks from a 10" wheeled classic it will still hit the mudguard. You can fit a stiffer spring, but that starts to change the way it will ride.
And if you fit 10" forks the 'new' hub will not be the same as the GS wheel you will need to use on the rear. And you cant fit the later 10" rear hub on a VBA engine so you end up with odd wheels.
Honestly I went round the houses on how to make the VBA more rideable and spoke to lots of other owners, in the end my advice is to accept it for what it is, stick to the 8's, and just do the box conversion. Mine was actually a nippy scooter with 4 speed, zipped along at about 50 and got there quick.
