Hi I've just found out that the rear brake is no longer effective so stripped the rear hub off to show the cause, the oil seals gone capput.Am I right in thinking I only have to remove the retaining clip and it comes out?It looks to me thatthe castled nut contains the seal and I don't have to remove. The scoots a 150 super 1971 on 8" wheels.Cheers.

Yes, the clip retains the castellated nut, this nut is left hand thread and you need to be careful not to trash the castles as you undo it, try and cobble some sort of tool rather than just hitting the castles with a screwdriver as most people do.
This is the retainer nut for the axel bearing and also carries the oil seal.

So if it carries it could I leave it in situ and just remove the spring clip then the seal.?

No the clip is there to stop the castlated nut coming undone, you need to remove that nut to replace the seal, it's an easy job though

it's worth getting an old tubular socket that fits around the castle nut and cutting/grinding out the slots to fit and wind it undone!

What I can't get around is the seal can be removed by removing the spring clip without removing the castle nut.

the seal mates against the hub, not the drive shaft. Thee Outer diameter of the drive shaft is smaller than the outer diameter of the hub. the hub slides over the drive shaft. My bet is the castle nut is close to the same size as the o.d. of the hub. Easy thing to see with the parts in front of you, hard thing to describe when typing. Hope that helps!

You have to remove the castleted nut to remove the wheel hub!! Once removed it will expose the the brake set up and oil seal in case opening.
Just pull the old seal out and replaced with new one!! Simple

Simple Different nut, not the hub nut, its the castelated seal carrier that needs to be removed to replace the seal..
