H, thanks for the kind offer, but I'm about as far away from Brighton as it possible to get (Northern Ireland)! I'll maybe leave the retorquing until another time. Enjoy the weekender, mate, I'll report what progress I've made next week.

The only thing I'd re-emphasise for your list is to have a good look around barrel before cleaning it all up, and clean it up before opening it up; not sure you need to yet really anyway. If it's raining and you can't get much done, maybe have a look at those two YouTube videos I linked to a couple of days ago; he'll show you loads of stuff you're asking about, or will be asking next. Not as good as Sausage, but free. Here is a quick guide to barrel work – scooterhelp is good for lots of stuff: www.scooterhelp.com/tips/engine/piston.install.lf.vespa.htmland here's your torques: beedspeed.com/html-pages/VespaTorqueSettings.htmNo Brighton or IOW for me; I'm a bit bored with that organised stuff really, and actually North of France, Wales or Southern Ireland are all closer to me as the crow flies than Brighton. The deck chair chucking remark is just a bit of Bank Holiday malarkey! I'm more into riding about and exploring these days; this weekend I'm heading up to Devon; up to Ilfracombe and over the Exmoor Coastal Road for a mooch about. I might spend the night somewhere, might camp; depends on mood and weather – Saturday and Monday look good here. Have a good weekend chaps, whatever you're up to. H; be nice to the visitors – it's free entertainment for you to go and have a laugh at the poseurs; Shiny Mods and Harley Hogs. Each to their own – bless 'em all!

Si, just had a read through that barrel work thread, not sure I'm ready for that just yet. I will give it a good clean though and I'll defo be watching those youtube videos. Thanks for those links, btw. I managed to fit the new plug today before the rain came, fired first kick! Picked up some gearbox oil, so hope to get that sorted and some lubing and checking. Forecast is still pish here, but I've offered prayers to the weather gods...
I have to say, as much as I'd like to get over to one of the BH weekenders, heading off for pastures new on the scoot sounds like mucho fun. Though I'd probably find a B&B (yes, I know, I'm a big blouse!) after a day's riding, as I tend to get a bit of a sore back if in the saddle too long. I suspect being 6'4" probably contributes to that. Anyway, have fun; my aunt used to live in Ilfracombe, so I know it's a beautiful part of the country

Ok, quick update. It has stayed dry for most of today, so I was able to get some bits and pieces done
Did banjo 'blow' test, stayed sealed. Submerged float in water, no air bubbles
Lubed cables, paying particular attention to the throttle. Still doesn't snap back but moves much more freely
Had another look at cylinder head and barrel (externally). No obvious sign of leaks as there was on Si's
Changed oil. Old stuff smelt of oil rather than petrol and had no rainbows, both of which I'm taking to be good signs. Used old stuff to lube foot brake, stand and clutch cable. Is there a running in period with new oil?
Cold, the scoot took a few kicks with full choke before she would start. But, pleasingly, warm she started first kick with WOT and no choke. Progress!!

that was the plan, H, but it's p*shing down here. I'm hoping to at least manage the daily commute for the rest of the week, get a few miles in and have a look at the new plug. Brown and dry is healthy, yes?

Sun was out this morning, D, managed to get scooter washed. Then the feckin' rain came! That said, took the missus and wee girl to Bangor this afternoon; tipping down in Belfast, blue skies and tops off (or taps aff, if you're a westie!) in Bangor. Mental!

Cheers Si! Weather and life have gotten in the way of establishing whether the scoot was just grateful for some tlc and repaid me, or the problem is sorted. I hope to get a few miles in during the rest of the week, and I'll post a pic of how the plug's looking and report how she's starting and running. Useful thread that, mate, thank you, and I note there's also another for head/barrel cleaning, which I hope not to need, but...
Watched those two youtube vids you posted up; more in-depth than anything I've ever tackled, but the guy obviously knows his stuff and put across his knowledge well. I wish I'd found this board when first got the scoot; between here, youtube and the Haynes manual, I reckon I could have saved myself quite a few quid on servicing!
How was your weekend exploring Devon, by the way?

Shame the weather wasn't better for Bank Holiday, but you can't let it stop you. Sunday I went to over Exmoor to Lynmouth; (Devon north coast) but no further, so it was partially as planned, but a bit grey and damp so not overnight; 150 miles. Weekend got off to a bad start with a Police car pulling out in front of me at 6am Saturday morning on wet roads! - Literally a law unto themselves. DIY has got to be better than £30/hr. - even if you make a few mistakes learning, and you also know what's already been done when you hit some troubleshooting. Only time will tell if you need more tweaking for this one; you know where we are now. (Who had their tops off in Bangor? I didn't realise it was that kind of place.)

The weather has been utter cack, so I admire your 'f**k it, I'm going anyway' attitude! I've never hit or been hit by a car, but on the three occassions when I needed to change my trousers, twice was taxis and the other the cops (utter **********)! DIY is definitely the way forward from now on. Bar electrics, I can't get my head around wiring diagrams!! You're right, only time will tell but, so far, so good. Two days' commuting, and hot and cold start has been two kicks max. That's actually better than the scoot has ever been, so all the tweaking, sweating and swearing has been worthwhile. Next job, I think, is de-coking, I know that hasn't been done in the last 6 months. I'll no doubt be back with more questions when I tackle that one Sadly, only kids and men who should have known better had their tops off in Bangor!!

Never did get to the bottom of the spark plug question Si, will have to take a look over the weekend, I've been using a number 8 since sorting my carb box leak. Hopefully you've your starting problem solved Nico, though I would definitely recommend getting the engine maintenance Dvd mate, you never know what wee job could be next. D.

Certainly seems that way so far, D, hot or cold it's three kicks maximum. Going to check the plug tomorrow, see where I am on the biscuit scale!!
I actually cancelled my ebay order of the maintenance one and am going to buy both from the link Si posted. It'll be money well spent, especially if it means I don't have to pay someone else to carry out repairs!!

Goodman Nico, you'll not regret it mate, the jobs I've done on the scoot in the past year I'd would never have dreamt of carrying out when I 1st bought the scooter, the great advice on here, help from some of the lads in the club and using the dvds to understand what everyone is taking about it has saved me a fortune in garage fee's. As Si said to me "it won't be long till you have the engine split"
Happy tinkering mate!!

The catalyst for my cry for help was going to the garage for a fill and having to abandon the scoot there cos the fecker wouldn't start again. Went back yesterday, filled up, paid and the scoot started second kick. So my thanks to all who contributed their wisdom and know-how to this thread, I will be raising a glass to your collective good health later. Cheers!!!
