Hi all, I'm having some problems with my P200. The engine has been fully rebuilt about 400 miles ago and was running OK. I recently put in a new gear selector and new cables (including clutch cable). The scooter now runs fine apart from, in either 3rd or 4th gear, it will kick out(rev out) at various stages through the gear. It's been a while since a cruciform has gone on me, but I seem to remember it would pull out at the top end of the gear.
Before I pull out the engine and strip down and replace with another new cruciform, could this issue be related to the selector or new cables, the clutch cable does seem very tight at the lever.
Thanks Chris

Well first, clutch cable shouldn't be tight, but I doubt thats the cause for gear jumping.
Check your gear cables, make sure there's some slack in both of them.
Third, as I recall the cruciform is not symmetrical, so you can't install it both ways. How did you install yours ?

more likely to be a over adjusted clutch slipping at high revs/max power , than a cruccy going at 400 miles ,unless your a real animal at the clutch/traffic lights , slacken the cable a tad , H

Not sure what you mean by rev out? Jumping out of gear? Or clutch slipping? As Vespasco said, if the cruciform is fitted the wrong way round then its going to be jumping gear. Adjusting clutches just right is not easy even when you know what you are doing

i'm goin by my bike ,xj600 yam, bit out the box but bear with me , if on overtakin i give it a big handful the revs will scream out , weak/old clutch springs ,the clutch has done 50.000 miles , ive a new set just been too lazy to change em, its fine from a standin start even when red light draggin it ,only happens in 3rd,4th n 5th , reckon thats pretty similar to winks problem , as his clutch n stuff is fairly low mileage my moneys on over adjusted cable , need to back it of or the clutch plunger will get "friction welded" to the pressure plate , not a "good thing" , H

Hi all, thanks for all the help, I ' m pretty sure it's not the cruciform and just the cables . I will adjust both the clutch and gear cables first, wack some more grease around the selector and see how it goes. Failing that it's have a look at the cruciform. Cheers Chris

By way of an update, I checked and adjusted both the gear and clutch cables and it still revved/kicked out of gear. Now as I say, I doubted if it was the cruciform as it had recently been changed and was running fine before putting it in my latest resto. The only other possibility was the recently changed selector box, so I took this off and replaced with a spare and the engine is now running sweet. Rather annoyed as the plating on the selector box was by "Quality Chrome" and looks the nuts. Is this a common problem with chromed selectors or is it just that the chromed spring just needs loosening or greasing it up( I'm happy to change it for a non chromed one) Any thoughts? Cheers Chris

My experience of worn cruciform is jumping out of 1st/2nd gear, didn't get as far as 3rd/4th.....Are you sure you have the right selector box ? I seem to recall a past issue of Scootering had a piece on the slight but subtle differences between various Vespa boxes which has caught me out in the past

as micky says , an i think sime's delved into this on 1 of his threads aswell , sip do a spacer that will make ya bling box sit right so its holding the cruccy at right height when detents in the dents on selecter pawl , so ya chrome might not go to waste eh , H

If your other gear selector solved the issue and ylu want to know which ones will fit, then the thing to check, with the selector box disconnected, is to put the selector into 3rd and measure how far the selector arm/locating 'key' sits above/below (or flush with) the gasket face. (I mean the thing that slots into the selector rod)
