Just fitted a new JL style exhaust to my otherwise standard PX 125. I've changed the main jet to 100. It starts fine, smoked a bit (white) at first and seems to run fine. I have noticed air blowing from where the exhaust fits onto the engine. I know the bolt is nice and tight on the clamp but I didn't use any gasket seal of any description. Should some air escape from this area? I notice there are some holes/vents here on the engine. I can't tell if the air is coming from these or the pipe.
Thanks.

Are you sure it's not just air blowing down from your flywheel? If the engine manifold's securely fitted there shouldn't be any gas escaping from the exhaust there.

as Spence says you will feel air from the flywheel there..
if it's smokey on start up have a look then should be able to see it, best be sure it is not leaking, messes up your mixture..

You could always seal the joint from the barrel to the manifold. Use bathroom silicone and put it on the barrel and then fit the manifold.

I don't there is an air leak now as when I open the choke when it is running it does not accelerate.
When I started it today tt was ticking over very slow, almost struggling to idle when warmed up.
When I took it out for a run it took a while before it would rev fully and the speed was SLOOOOOW. It got a bit better but struggled up hills and I had to keep changing down.
Also it started from cold first time with no choke and after the run I did a plug chop and it was black - sooty. When I tried to start it from hot is was more difficult to start.
I will open the air screw a little and change the jet for a 98. Any other ideas/causes please?

Hi there, interesting that my JL pipe has the same problem. The exhaust manifold doesnt have a clamp the way a standard exhaust does to tighten down on the exhaust outlet of the barrel. I have tried using high temperature gasket materials etc as suggested above and I still have a small area of blow out. I'd like to suggest something useful but I am starting to think the JL manifold is just not designed well?!
