I've set my timing 22 degrees before top dead centre as instructed on a website, is this correct for unleaded petrol as it doesn't mention it .Cheers to anyone who replies .

most run about 2 degrees retarded from stock because of moderns fuels ,you dont say which website an wether your sprints still stock, as 22deg is the stock timing , i think i'd re-set to 20 an see how it rides , noticeably down on power advance it a bit , first sign of "pinking" retard a tad n you'll be fine . timing light didn't go too well flashing intermittently went back to bulb and 12v battery method and moving the flywheel. Anyway all was going well went for a test ride but after a mile it backfired when stationary at lights and died.Back to square one.I(we) have changed the coil, carb, points, condensor, htlead, plug,Now thinking of getting electronic ignition unless anyone has any ideas or would you do the same?

Disco Stu says: "Check the resistance across the coils on the stator. L.T. coil. See ya later, alligator" Disco Stu

backfire n death , methinks the woodruff keys sheared n flys slipped round , if keys ok see "disco stu" above ,an see that a spanner will hang from the magnets in flywheel , lost magnetism has more effects at low speed mostly tho, H

woodruff key changed, feel like getting the electronic ignition just to eliminate all the timing stuff.Driving me mental. Will check with a spanner though.

Can backfiring only be timing related ,there isn't anything else that can cause it is there??

Bad timing, bad ignition coils, blocked exhaust? What resistance readings do you get from the stator? That may give you a clue Do you have another stator to try by any chance? As its the only thing you've not changed i think?
(Disco Stu is shining his cuban heels and cant help right now)

cuban heels eh,is that what you call it when caught puttin a polish on it , aswell as above a leak at exhaust downpipe will draw air n give backfires on overun , a duff condenser delaying spark can do it aswell , an a massively over fuelling carb can put enough petrol in til exhaust is soaked an "clears its throat" usually blowing the downpipe off . an sadly a recently changed key is suspect ,either crap new keys ,theres lots that are ,or a fly that didnt seat properly or have its nut done tight enuff , if going lectronic its a small taper pk for you , you can shop around an get the bits for about 80-90 ,or buy a kit with it all for 150 , H

I've now ordered electronic kit from sip fingers cross it solves the backfiring.Had the bike 2 months now and desperate to go out on it more than a test drive round the block.
