well i signed up here a while back, and as of yet am still just a lurker and not a rider... although that'll hopefully change in the next year or so, when i have money and somewhere to keep a scoot!
anyway... i was wondering, are cutdowns suitable for a first scoot. i might be making a fool of myself but do they handle differently (im guessing yes) but in a way that'd make it difficult... that sorta thing.
also, is cutting down a scooter something that only a pro could do? i love the look but havent seen that many for sale, then again i only casually browse mags and websites.

Don't do it! Ha, that's just my own personal opinion. Not a fan of the look but each to their own eh.
Have wondered how they handle myself. Will be interested to see what response you get.

no worries mate any input is good input! i've seen some cutodwns that look smart but some that look plain ugly... i think it depends how far you cut them down... dont want a drag racer! haha!

If you want a cutdown as your first scoot then the best models to chose are either a genuine Italian SX200 or a TV. Just hack away until you've got rid of all the bits you don't like and then sit and watch all the Mods weep ;D, oh and don't forget to matt black it!!! On a slightly more serious note....... A cutdown will handle no differently from a standard, apart from being slightly lighter, unless you start to extend the forks, in which case it's a completely different bag of beans.

Mind you I do admit to making a V90 cutdown in the '80's and my brother did a V50 Special, trimmed down legsheilds, cut off the sidepanels, sorted!

Crack on old son, why not cut a scoot if that's what you like? I wouldn't cut a Lambretta unless it was absolutely dire, although if you can get a spare set of panels Maybe you could chop and change in line with the weather? I ride a cut down T5, because it was beyond economical repair due to too many dents and deviations. I also have a full LML 180 so I can change without the hard work. Try to get a right minger that needs extensive work to it to get it straight and complete, it should be cheap enough, plenty in Scootering. You don't need to be an expert, just methodical that's all. Use either an angle grinder, or the much easier to control, jigsaw. It will cut the panels easily. Plan it and take your time, once cut you can't stick it back on. The handling doesn't change that much, as has been said just lighter, depends how much you cut really. One thing is, it goes faster in the wind because it cuts down drag a bit. Any advice needed, just ask.
