Just been looking on facebook vespa page and someone's put a thread on www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10203538927059388&set=pcb.613075358818619&type=1&theaterCan anyone help I found a crack in casing as you can see in this pic buy the holding clip I have been told you can buy repair part that hold bearing etc in place if so where can I buy one??? When building the engine back up few weeks ago and I installed the main bearing with great difficulty I noticed the same issue in my casing as shown in the link above!! I have a small piece of the case mounting missing which holds the Cir clip in place. I didn't think anything of it at the time but now I'm thinking sh*t! Any advice please as I'm very worried that I have missed something major on the re-build . Thanks

Sorry link not workie....I think i know what you mean.... the repair kits are from SIP.
Did you heat the casing to get the bearing in? is the crack all the way through to the inside of the crankcase?

I'll be doing a similar job at some stage. Ive already bought the 'bearing ring', from SIP. My next question would be: whats the best way to fit it? Tap and bolt? (Lots of time, effort n expense for me) How deep can you go/length of fixing? Large stainless self tapper? (Easily done- pilot hole, screw, done)
Ive also had success by welding it. I used an old circlip, in place, got it welded to roughly size and shape, grind/file smooth (if needed).

Trying to think back to what I saw when had the engine apart ,,, don't think there's a crack all the way through the casing but enough of the lip lost to make the Cir-clip not secure at one end. I found this on SIP is this the kind of thing I need ?? www.sip-scootershop.com/en/products/cluster+circlip+sip+bearing_87805000I take it I've not wrecked the casings and can be fixed? but can the engine be still be used while it's like it??

first link not workin for me , 2nds ok so got an idea of what ya mean,if the cracks not all the way through the casing an just the lip that holds the circlip in ,it depends on how secure the circlip is ,it acts as a stop for the bearing an thus the crank from moving under side loads from the clutch ,so if youve any doubts about it flicking out ,with bad consequences , i'd consider doing the repair before using the engine in anger , ive seen an built a couple of lumps with chips/cracks to the lip of the circlip groove ,its not a rare thing, an where ive been happy the clip will stay in have built without repair ,always with a new clip, havent had one go on me but it is a worry in the back of ya mind ,an a judgement call, without seeing the thing up close n personal hard to say. if the crack extends to the outside its a welding job ,ive seen bodges with chemmy metal/jb weld to seal cases but its only ever temporary an doesnt restore the strength to them leading to crack worsening/widening an saveable cases becoming crackered. Thinking back on the break I saw, The lip which holds one end of the Cir-clip in place has pretty much broken off so nothing really holding the clip in place. Not a massive chunk is missing but enough to make me feel a'bit unsure what might happen if the Cir-clip pops back towards the clutch. i'm gutted I didn't look into this issue before putting the engine back together, but as a first time strip down I overlooked it as a real problem. I'm gonna have to bite the bullet and strip back down again and take another look! Will post pics when I finish crying!!! and get time Cheers guys
