hi all, does anyone know if the premium fuel that the likes of shell an BP sell (e.g optimax) will have any adverse effects on a 2-stroke engine? i have heard it can cause it to run too lean? anyone had any experience? also anyone know of a decent 2-stroke fuel additive? i like to keep my engine running smoothly... ;D

I don't know the answer to your question, but I hope not. I run my PX200 on it as much as possible.
I was recently having some starting problems, (now sorted) and I was having a discussion with a scooter shop mechanic who asked what fuel and oil I used. I told him that I used high octane fuel and fully synthetic 2 stroke oil (Selenia.) His reply was "well you're using the right stuff."
It will be interesting to hear what others have to say on the subject.

Naw, it won't do any harm, I used Optimax when I was running a Malossi 172 kik as the head was modded for higher compression.
Use the regular stuff now, don't really think there is anything to be gained using higher octane on a standard motor.
If you mean 2 stroke oil, any good fully synthetic such as Putoline TT.

stick with standard unleaded spend the money saved on fully synthetic 2-stroke oil and no extra additives needed HIGH octane fuel burns SLOWER than LOW octane. So in your PX it will run smoother, as the bang is slower, but it will also be slower, and as a consequence of using more throttle it will also use more fuel HIGH octane fuel however, works on vehicles which have either been modified, or have adaptive ignitions which ADVANCE the spark to take advantage of the higher compression ratios this fuel will function with.

I tried BP ultimate the other day and my scooter ran like a bag of nails.I topped up with premium unleaded and it ran ok again . My VW beetle doesn't like it either so I'm going tro stick to the 95 RON from now on! More proof that change is bad!

I run mine probably half the time on high octane and I don't notice any difference in performance between them. I was just under the impression that the high octane burnt a little bit cleaner and was therefore better for the engine. But having read the above comments, I'll probably just save my money and not bother any more. Thanks for the advice.

I think that this one needs a bit of clarification....... High octane fuel does not burn slower. High octane fuel does not increase power. High octane fuel does not cause your motor to run lean.
High octane fuel has a higher KNOCK rating than standard fuel which basically means that the temperature at which it ignites is higher. If you only use your scoot for nipping round town or short rides then standard fuel is perfectly ok, however if you do the rallies or thrash the tits off it everywhere then you really should use higher octane fuel as it allows your motor to run hotter without running the risk of pre ignition, or pinking, which can be caused by many things such as too high compression, carbon build up on piston crown or exhaust port etc, but always ends in a holed piston. If you're going to tune your scoot or even run your standard over long distances then my advice is to suck it up and pay the extra for Optimax etc, it works out a lot cheaper than a new piston every time you go away!
