Damn clutch!!! What have i done wrong?!?!? God?! Anyone?! Engine is back together. Running sweet. Spent the last 1\2 hour freezing my nuts off, breaking in the rebuilt motor. I havent taken it past 1/4 throttle as yet ... So far so good... In 4th gear at 4400rpm speed =46mph (before it would have been v slightly less mph @ 44mph, so somethings improved)!! BUT ...... My clutch....which was perfect before, doesnt fully disengage now!!?!? Arghhhhh!!?! Its the same spacer behind the clutch, same new clutch, same this, same that. All of which was fine before. Previously i noticed the spacer behind the clutch was not engaged in the woodruff key!? So in that respect a shim or thicker spacer may be the solution!? I have installed an oil cog @ 3.68mm thick
Are there shims/thicker spacers avaialble for the spacer/washer/oil cog? What have i missed? Could it be the brass plunger is not installed correctly so not giving enough leverage?? Normally i could set the cable up almost perfect before i even pull the clutch lever in to check it. This time i was forever tightening it. Ive slackened it back off now to where it should be, with a 'little' slack at the hand lever.... (Its a BGM clutch)
First tho' , is there anything obvious ive forgotten to do/check??

It must be dragging/ not disengaging completely. It's certainly not slipping. Firstly, was it working fine BEFORE engine strip? How long a run out did you have? SAE 30 oil? Cold? I had similar after an engine rebuild (inner oil seal issue), and clutch wouldn't work so well after the rebuild (it never was top rate) but after using automatic transmission fluid instead of SAE30 it worked fine and has carried on doing so; what two years later?
Give us all a fighting chance to diagnose the problem with all the info before and after etc. Good luck.

To answer your questions, which i cant see right now (im using my phone) so forgive me if i forget what the questions are!! although most answers are already given .....
Yes its dragging Its a BGM clutch Ive ridden it for just 1/2hr so far ( since the rebuild) so was fully warmed up SAE30 , as before (and always) It was fine /perfect before the rebuild
I can only think it would be the plunger , unless something has changed which ive not noticed and maybe i need an extra shim/thicker spacer for some weird reason!?
Im going to have to have a look later. Maybe ill strip the clutch down and oil the plates ...!?
Anything else i should be looking for??

if it was fine before strip i cant see it being a shim/spacer problem ,unless youve installed the crank right over 1 side ,which i doubt you'd do, how long was the clutch out for an how was it stored ,if youve had it soaking to long an not hung it for 24 hours to "drip-dry" the corks can swell n give drag , probably a plunger/instalation prob ,ive done it where your so keen to run the motor you rush the last few simple stuff , reckon its as you think a strip n check/careful re-instalation , the numbers above seem promising for the mods to engine youve done , cant wait til youve broke it in an can post some WOT figures , H

the spacer/oil drive cog behind the clutch fits on the crank with the chamfered edge facing out (I think, maybe someone can confirm) That could be the problem.

an would be a easy mistake to make rushing to finish ,i cant remember to confirm bsr65's idea but reckon he might be onto something ,hope it does turn out to be a simples/DOH moment an a easy fix ,H

Sime, you're a star! Many thanks I was at a bit of a loss earlier. I really couldnt remember. I only had my very slow phone, searching took forever. Fail. However, as soon as i saw your post, i followed it, then went 'Oh yeh, Now i do remember'! O F ! Hahaha! I blame it on the painkillers im on i can barely walk atm. Or bend my leg. Fixing my clutch really hurt!! Thanks again glad youre still following ! But fix it i did!!! I really cant be sure what the problem was. I didn't want to f around so i took the clutch out to start agan. Nothing obvious to see. The cover popped off quite quickly so i didnt get a chance to see the plunger. Took off the cog/spacer, it was correct way (internal chamfer towards flywheel). No signs of rubbing anywhere. Stripped the clutch. Now, the plates did seem a 'little' dry, yet there was oil. That was the nearest answer i have but aint confident it was that which was causing the problem. Cleaned everything in petrol and dried it. Had a cuppa. Got the solution i needed to the plate order! So, starting from the beginning, with fresh components and a fresh mind, assembled everything again, with German-like efficiency after (trying to) watching the vid, thanks Gaz. Adjusted the cable , this time there was definately less play on the actuator arm!! I noted before that i had about 10mm or more of play on the arm before it hit the pressure plate on the clutch. This time was 1\2 that . Assembled everything else. Rolled scoot along in gear. Kool! Started it after ahout 20 kicks (it had been on its side all day). That was worrying as it always starts after 1 or 2 kicks! It took me nearly all day just to do all that. So, I cleared away my tools, put my jacket on, another painkiller and went for a test ride. I had an 8mm spanner by my feet to tweak the clutch cable which I slackened off a little more. And at last, a smile was back on my face!!! And now i remember why i treated myself to the bgm clutch. I smile everytime i pull away! It feels sooo nice. But i do need to change my clutch cable v v soon. It was too much for me to do today. Getting wet, bad knee, working in a swamp and the radio stuck on Local FM, which stands for F'in Miserable! Not the best of days! But...Sorted!! I'll update the other thread too Cheers chaps
