Hi guys,,, I have managed to snap one of my piston rings today LONG STORY!!! but was wondering how lose should the rings be on the piston before you install the piston?? I took my piston out today and found the rings where pretty much hanging off the piston and could be rattled around lot's. Loads of play I mean loads! Gonna by some new ones this week so suppose will have to run them back in again!! Cheers guys

Bummer! The piston rings will naturally spring outwards, its no problem. You can actually check the ring gap of your rings to help work out what size you need. Also make sure the grooves in the piston that the rings go into are nice and clean!!

put rings in bore an push down with a piston til there bout a inch down ,then measure the gap between ends with feeler gauges ,new ones should be 8-14 thou ,over 2mm an there earings for punks , less than 8 thou with a needle file take a bit of leavin no burrs , they need a min of 8 so they dont bind in the bore , 1 good thing about owning a broken ring (fnar-fnar) ,sorry pompey matelo joke ,is the broken ring is perfect tool to clean the grooves in piston , an put the bits on ya workbench n check its all there ,ya dont want any in the cases , H

If they were loose enough to snap then they were past their limit!
