I can't get my PX kickstart off and for such a straight forward (or so I would have thought) task, it is doing my swede in. I have undoing the bolt, then wiggling it and tapping it away from the engine side from underneath but it doesn't want to go anywhere, moves a couple of mil then goes no further.
any advice on a simple trick to get it off?

Have you pulled the bolt right out? There's a notch in the shaft, so you have to wiggle the lever and pull the bolt out, then wiggle the lever off.

not taken the bolt all the way out no, loosened it right off though. does it need to come all the way then as it is obstructed by the flywheel cover.?
guess I might need to whip that off too

It generally is a bit fiddly, but it does have to come right out, or at least clear of the shaft, and you shouldn't have to remove the flywheel cover. Try depressing/lifting the kick-start a tad, so that the bolt can wiggle free without hitting the cover - on mine it clears it. Just have a little gentle swear, and jer-jer-jiggle it a bit. - withdraw the bolt as far as you can, withdraw the lever a bit, jiggle, repeat......... (The nut losens the grip of the splines, but the notch in the shaft stops the lever coming off unless bolt is withdrawn).
