I went out for a little ride tonight, at first it was fine but after about 20 minutes or so and every now and again, when I went to pull away in first the engine just died. Now I will confess that I only passed my CBT on Sunday and tonight was my first ride out, but I know the difference between stalling and the engine dying. My PX is on a 61 plate and has only done 79km, does it just need time to run in or am I missing something really obvious.
yhis is my first ever scooter and I'm an absolute novice at this stuff.
I would be grateful for any pointers.
Cheers, Ian.

Give it some more throttle when pulling away. Release clutch slowly. Turn petrol tap to reserve. 3 o clock position. Check petrol level. Under the seat
A '61 plate with only 79km?!?!
Bloody phone. 5th edit?!

So it's as simple as give it more revs?
What would putting it to reserve do? Sorry if this is basic stuff.....
the he previous owner had a none scooter accident and is still undergoing treatment so can't ride it. I just happened to be in the right place at the right time to be able to get it.

A 61 plate won't have reserve. They're just off and on.
It may also be the clutch cable needs tightening, 79km says 'cable bedding in' to me.

It is pretty clunky when going into 1st and does clunk when changing gear. I did my CBT on an old T5, although very tatty to look at it was really smooth to ride.

i normally take off in 2nd, not that this is going to help. Generally practice on level ground at taking off in 2nd as was said, give it a little more revs.
Reason for taking off in 2nd, if you give it more revs sometimes it can jump in first and if you are not comfortable it can give you a fright and its also easier moving from 2nd - 3rd. Once you feel you have mastered the take off, go back to taking off in 1st, or if you are lazy like me just always take off in 2nd and only use 1st on hills.
Do you know where the clutch cable is. Single cable with a trunnion at the end of a lever coming from the engine. Back brake cable is obvious as it sits further back than the clutch cable and the gear cables go to the selector box at the front of the engine. gary

Thanks for the pointers, I've not had chance to get out on it tonight, weather permitting Saturday morning will be spent putting in some miles and if I'm being honest, more practice.
i have to admit, I've not had so much fun as when I'm on that scooter.

yep agree with above ,cables bedding in,giving the initial stretch ,an unless on a hill i use 2nd to pull away ,mostly coz i'm lazy an had a pair of the no-ball end levers around i'd forgot why i'd taken them off for.make it tricky to do a clean no jerk pull away in first ,an popping a wheelie for a second whilst spitting rubber out from a spin at rear ,might look cool if i was a teen ,a ugly/toothless/grey haired dust-farter looks like he's trying too hard .an it kills ya clutch quick . welcome to scooting anyway ,they will make you smile til ya cheeks hurt ,right up to were they break ya heart .an then ya fix it an start all over again. stops ya getting bored . H an if ya new to scoots an need advice on mechanics ,time to find ya local scooter club an meet some "interesting" people ,drink some beer an see the dodgiest dance moves outside of a san francisco gay clubs dancing cage/podium. they wont bite ,well most wont ,but will give tips/help on fixing em or where to trust local to do it. where in the world are ya . I'm in Dudley, West Mids. There are a few clubs local to me. I'm originally from Walsall where a new pub called 'Scooters' has opened. You can find them on Facebook, they have some fine nights and days there.

I went out for a good run this morning, I think it was just the fact that I'm not giving it enough revs, gave it more today and it seemed fine, I think I was just reluctant to give it some Welly. Thanks for your help.
i will return with soon with more questions I dare say.

If you're still unsure its probably best you get it checked out by someone else who has a vespa.

I'm pretty sure it was me being a new rider, I've had an hour or so out today and it seems a lot more smooth now., I will take it up to the place I bought it from when I get chance as they have to sort something else out for me.

good to hear you've mastered the take off, whats the other thing you need sorting ,new piaggio's are supposed to have a 500mile first service is that it,as with info n help on here you could do it yourself an save the cash for petrol or good gloves n waterproofs ,as the summers shaping up to be a wet 1. sorry everybody ,my feud with god is getting out of hand,he's not waiting til I get my helmet on anymore an starting to rain when he knows ive got to ride.like today ,60 miles an its pouring down.that its also a bank holiday is just a bonus . an sorry nic ,but have never been to san fransisco ,living in brighton an seeing the pride parade every year means ive got a fair enuff idea what the clubs there would be like.but stand by my simile/statement that drunk scooterists can throw the craziest shapes/dance moves ive ever witnessed.havent worked out why scoots do this to people yet tho, H

It's nothing major, the crash bar on the front need fixing to the scooter that's all, it's fixed on the front but not underneath by my left foot. I'll take it up to them, giving me a nice excuse to have a mooch around the shop.

Having read a few things on here the cable will stretch after a few miles, it could do with just that little adjustment.

Post by henri on May 26, 2014 13:26:54 GMT
the cable runs down to a arm that comes out the clutch cover an through a adjuster in the swinging arm ,from memory there either 8 or 10mm size, think its the first.loosen the locknut an wind the adjuster out a bit an do locknut back up.there's minimal adjustment there an if you need more you have to loosen the adjuster an move the cable trunnion (brass bit stopping cable slipping through arm)further up the cable an then re-do the adjuster to get it spot on .its a bit fiddly an a sort of 3 handed job ,you can get cable pullers to do it but i use small mole grips to tension the cable an hold it whilst doing trunnion up tight, thats a 6mm an 7mm spanner job,tho some trunnions have a screwdriver slot in them .it takes longer to tell ya than to do it .you must leave about 1-2mm free-play at the lever, measured between lever an its holder ,before you can "feel" the clutch start to work. if you want to self-maintain ya scoot i recommend getting a haynes or others manual as they explain stuff better than i can ,an develop a "feel" for cables as theres a few on a scoot ,an at garage rates you dont want to be paying for simple adjustments .hope my answer helps ,H

And to still be doing it 25-30 (or more) years later? I've some great mates in Brighton - Moo, Apoo and Rupert son-of-Thatcher - and they're generally weirder than most scooterists I know from other areas.

why do ya think i live here ,in comparison to some i seem normal an can pass unnoticed, well so long as i dont try smiling ,it never comes out right, specially when ive forgotten to put me teeth in ,again. only probs are sea-air/seagulls/an a green party motorist hating council who cant even arrange to get the bins collected regularly. that an some self elected "king mods" who try an tell ya were ya can park on the bank holiday bashes .wannabe traffic warden nazi cliques aside most of the rest of us scooters are ok here ,even the local MAG rep rides(pushes) a bretta . Alex? Forgot him. Nice lad, but again... somewhat odd.
But then he's Vulcans SC, so to be expected.
And, speaking of Vulcans, how could I forget the mad Irish landlord (since relocated), Skunk? One of the funniest men I've ever met. Much missed, Australia doesn't know what they've been lumbered with!
Oh, and King Mods are EVERYWHERE. Usually been riding scooters ten minutes and telling you you're doing it wrong.
