Hello all
I have a PX125 and I have been to that the gear oil is contaminated.
Can anybody tell me what causes this and what could happen in prolonged use.
I am obviously going to get it sorted but have to wait until I get paid.

What is it contaminated with ?......if it's petrol , then that is a sign that your clutch side main seal has gone . If this is the case you will notice performance issues and eventually a full stop, and will mean an engine strip down to replace the seal. ....if it is another contamination the easiest solution is to change the gear oil , which is cheap as chips.

Gear oil usually is contaminated by wet clutch residues, which is totally normal. Oil get dirty or dark so to speak. Then oil doesn't lubricate as it should. It's not good in prolonged use, but your scooter doesn't break immediately.
If you use it long enough with dirty oil, some of the residues may stay in gear box when you change the oils. In case that oil cannot hold and transfer all the residues. Then you could try to flush the gear box with new oil by changing the oils again after couple of days.

as mickmidas said petrol usually means clutch side seal gone ,its a engine out/strip job i'm afraid ,but when done ya have a nearly new bottom end to ya engine.H.

Would this cause the gearbox to sieze?
How much do think I should be looking at to fix?

It can damage the box if the oil gets too diluted, but a little bit of petrol wont kill it.
Often leaks from the oil seal are quite small and people i know (not me LOL) will just change the box oil more frequently to put off the innevitable!
Parts for the job are very mininal cost, maybe £20, it's in the labour and what else you decide to do whilst its apart that bumps the cost.
If you are any way mechanically minded or know someone who is, this is a job that can be done in half a day.
I'm not sure the seize you mention is a related problem, if it were a box seized that would be pretty spectacular in a very bad way and to have so much petrol in your oil to cause that, you'd probably have known about it before it happened- gears would be harsh and noisy, chucking oil out the clutch breather, clutch would be shot...

New set of seals £20, would change the cruciform and rod, clutch nut, clutch woodruff key & maybe a set of corks and plates for clutch a litre of 30 sae. Your bearings are fine don't bother with them. £60 parts + 4/5 hours labour. Where do you stay, someone on here may help you. gary

Bryn - a leaking seal can cause a top end seize though - runs lean, gets hot, soft seize.
Where are you jid?

^ thought that was only fly side Nik, where it sucks air in. Clutch side spits fuel out into the gear box, would run lean if it also sucked air in through the clutch breather I guess, is that what you thinking?

Long way off then.
Yes Bryn, the engine can suck air in through the seal as well.. Remember the suck-squeeze-bang-blow cycle? It blows fuel out on the explosive bit, but sucks air in on the suck bit. It's not as bad as on the flywheel side unless it gets really tired, but it does do it.
There is a test for it, but I'll be damned if I can remember it!
