Hello My friend had a problem with trying to stop the engine in ET4 1996. We found out it was due to a loose green wire which was initially soldered to the rear od the green key switch (similar to the one on images attached). In order to kill the engine we twisted the ignition key to OFF position and intended to hand touch the green wire to its original connector. However while doing it we accidentally touched it to the RED wire connector next to it. This killed the engine damn well as we can not start it anymore now. Status is: 1. Starter motor works, 2. Lights, horn and indicator works 3. We replaced two fuses next to the battery (one was actually burned) Any ideas what else can we do before going shopping for new switches, CDIs, relays etc and etc. Are there any more fuses in this bike We can replace / check? Thanks for all the suggestions. Krzy Attachments:

hi,im not sure about a 96 et4 but later piaggio's (lx on) have a key operated immobiliser ,if yours has 1 an its fried its bad news ,havent got a et4 wiring diagram to hand so am trying from memory .i think there's only the fuses by battery an youve changed them .pull the plug out an stick cap back on lay it on head ,preferably in a shaded spot an spin engine over an check for a spark .if theres no spark my guess would be youv'e fried the cdi somehow. theres a couple of relays 1 for indicators an 1 is the safety interlock on starter motor ,so the start button doesnt get power til a brake lever is pulled in,as starter is working yours seems ok . before ordering/paying for parts i'd have a good look/check for wiring connections/burnt wires/battery state.as it might be something youve accidentaly done whilst working on scoot . hi,am home now an dug out my haynes "book of lies" for auto piaggio's/vespa's ,an dont think ive good news for you.early et2's an et4 50's didnt have the immobiliser an only 1 fuse.you said you'd changed both fuses so geussing yours is a immobiliser fitted scoot. 1 fuse is main power feed to ign switch, probably the one burnt up from the short.other is power feed to immobiliser .your mate is supposed to have 2 keys for scoot ,1 red tab, master key an 1 blue tab everyday use coded key. the proccess for re-programming after code-loss (battery disconection)is 1 put red in an turn on for 1-3seconds 2 within 10 secs put in blue an turn on for 1-3 secs 3 within 10 secs put red back in an turn on for 1-3secs. ok,an then keys are coded up an scoot wont be immobilised anymore . by blowing the fuse you might of cut off leccy to immobiliser long enough to lose the code ,but only if you disconnected battery ,as second fuse still gets power, unless ya blew that 1 too. also slim chance that the sparks from short caused interference radio waves that made scoot think it was being stolen an shut down the immobiliser .as there run by the key code being read by radio waves from a "ring" right by the ignition switch .thats the good news if ya mates got the 2 keys ,if not its a piaggio main dealer job to re-programe scoot or replace immobiliser/keys. 4 weeks ago a mate lost his keys for a gt125 an before he found them i heard of a scoot shop in south london that would re-program for 70 quid, sorry cant remember the name or were i found it,either on this forum or adverts in back of scootering. that aint the bad news tho, same mate lost his keys for good, a week later an was too embarressed to "fess-up",called in the local piaggio dealer to here in brighton .he started by charging 75quid to recover the scoot 1/2 a mile to work on it ,then £385 !!!!! to replace keys an immobiliser .money grabbing scumbag. most dealers arent as bad tho, when my mate noticed some weird noises on way home he checked the scoot ,when they put body work back on the apprentice given the job must of got bored after 2 screws as thats all we could find being used, mechanic apologised an sorted it straight away whilst swearing at apprentice, but when mate went to re-collect scoot scumbag owner tried to charge him 28 quid for labour.sorry bit off track there , back to your scoot,i'm pretty sure ive read/heard when i had a lx that if immobiliser is triggered the scoot will still start but only run at tickover ,but that might be just for later scoots ,its over 16 months since missus sold her lx ,so not sure.but do remember the lx had led lights in speedo red an green that flashed/light up/or sumting if immobiliser is triggered .its over 2 years since she ran a et4 for a couple of months but seem to remember same led's on that ,an they are in the haynes et4 wiring diagram .i think the red led is supposed to flash 1 when ign turned on ,if it flashes 2 an stays on thats a fault code . have a forum search for immobiliser ,ya will probably find better info ,gt200 use the same system as do lx's an i think the s's do to. also earlyer i said only 2 relays ,was wrong, forgotten there is another for the auto-choke ,they shouldnt have been damaged by short ,i'm guessing but its either immob or cdi,an my money would be on immobiliser ,fair chance i'm wrong tho, you'll have to ask/search around.sorry henri
