Hi there,
My '72 Sprint Veloce has been left outside without a cover for the last few months and is looking the worse for it with very light surface rust showing on the chrome and other areas. Nothing serious but want to try to reduce the onset of any corrosion. I gave it a massive clean up with a ton of T-Cut over the summer, but perhaps should have put some protection on afterwards.
I now have a cover, but would welcome advice on what I should put on the scoot to try to help it through the winter months and weather. I'll be using it from time to time.
Should I be using some kind of wax coasting or WD40 or something similar. I have a can of ACF-50 from my old Triumph, but think that is supposed to be used for mechanical parts. Can I use it on the rest of the bike?
Would welcome any tips/suggestions.
Thanks,
James

You can and should use the ACF-50. It will the collect dirt over winter, but your scoot will be happy and rust free when you clean it off next spring.

If you're using a cover, let the scooter cool down before you use it... Heat + moisture = rust.

ACF-50 is supposed to be the best stuff for the job (never used personally).
I waxoil the underside inc above the rear wheel, mudguard etc.
Then use GT85 rather than WD40 on the engine bits and pieces.
I redo it all quite often over the winter..

I’ve had my ’83 PX two years now, and whilst working on the underside this year I did notice the rust and bubbling increasing since I bought it. It is still good and solid – just bubbling up. It lives outside under a cover and I use it all year round. I’ve never used anything like ACF-50 or Waxoil. I was intending to nip it in the bud next Spring by stripping and painting/sealing it somehow, but I have no idea how to go about it, or what to use. It isn't flashy or shiny, just a day-to-day scoot. All my maintenance work is done in the garden, so I don’t have the luxury of any flashy blasting or spraying – any suggestions better than wire brush and Hammerite/underseal?

Thanks loads for your suggestions. I'm off work this week on paternity leave so will try to get 30 mins tomorrow to give it a quick clean, dry, and then once over with the ACF and GT spray.

use a wax resin polish on the paintwork and leave it on autoglym high gloss will give a decent barrier take any chrome work off and take it indoors use wax oil for under the floor pan make sure its fully dry before you apply it or it will trap in any damp its messy but works

Definately waxoyl, I did mine two years ago and it's still going strong after around 25,000 miles or so.
Oh, and congratulations on the forthcoming.
