This is not about the pros and cons – I accept that there is (probably) no harm in giving it a go. Sadly it is also not magic, and I’m looking at it again now because my mechanicals are probably not as bad as I’d feared, not to fix them. My question is about finding the stuff. I live in Cornwall, unless you want a pasty or a postcard shopping is pretty poor. I have no big stores, and one auto-parts that has less in stock than me. I pretty much need it mail order. I’ve looked on Ebay (boo-hiss, blah blah), and I can find two ATF/CTFs that seem to fit the bill (both matching Ford ESP-M2C-166H Spec.), they are Morris Dexron II, and Unipart GUL 1201. There are Comma and Castrol ATF oils, but I can't find data for them, so they've not made the shortlist. I’m using Rock SAE 30 (mineral?) oil at present, so I just want to be sure - · That the oil I get is right for the job, · That it mixes OK with the residual oil left from a normal draining. So, I reckon it’s probably worth a go, but only if I can be sure I’m using the right stuff. I’d be very grateful if anyone can say if either of these is OK, or give a link to something suitable.

Personally I'd stick with the SAE 30 Rock oil. Just Googled it and Amazon have it for under a tenner with free delivery and Scooterrestorations.com have it for £5.50 a bottle but with a daft delivery price of £5.71. Might be worth it if you buy a few bottles though.

ive got comma sae30api classic monograde motor oil,its not much different than the rock oil in my opinion, and its a lot cheaper, its only to lubricate the gearbox, and its the kind of stuff scooterists used for decades before all the fancy specs came apparent, another one is morris film sae 30,which was recently advertised on ebay by a scooter shop as [vespa motor oil]

Thanks all. This was not a question about SAE30; I use Rock Oil SAE30 and have no problem with it, or with buying it. This is an ongoing discussion about ATF, which I might give a try, if I can find the right one.

Well I won't use SAE 30 again as the ATF is working brilliantly. Each to their own eh?

Hi Kru, Did you see the first post in this thread? It was a question about a couple of ATFs I had found that I thought might be OK. I thought you might shed some light on those. I'm still game for trying a correct ATF, which is why I started this thread, what I said about SAE30 was to clarify the question because I got a couple of answers about SAE30 rather than ATF.

Well I used my ATF as per that spec and only drained down as much as one can with the std drain plug. I haven't had a problem relating to non mixing of the residual oil (SAE30) that is hidden in the various areas and just topping up with ATF 'till it dribbled out the level plug.
