Hi all
Just joined the forum today & this is my first post.
Just got my 2001 Vespa PX back from the repair shop where it was serviced & MOT'd etc etc after having been off the road in a damp shed after a couple of years.
I started it up without checking if there was oil in it. It went for a very short distance & then chucked it. I then found out it had no oil in. I have filled it up with oil but now it won't start. Have I f**cked it up ? Also the fuel tap has an A & a C on it - is A the "on" position for the fuel ?
I'm not knowledgeable in anyway about mechanics but I would not have started it up if I'd known it had no oil in - so be gentle with me please - anyway I assumed that as it had been serviced & the garage said it was running ok that it would have had oil in.
If I have done it some damage what I am looking at to get it fixed ?
thanks for your help
Brian

Depends which oil you're talking about. If you mean the oil in the sightglass, then odds are it's seized. A bit of a bugger, but fixable with a little patience and support. If the gearbox, then possibly more serious, but if it's only done a handful of miles like that, then the odds are it's OK. Either way, it's repairable with a few quid thrown at it.
As for the fuel tap - As you sit on it, to the right is on, to the left is off.
When you say it won't start, what exactly is happening - does the kickstart go down, or is it locked solid? If it goes down, can you hear the engine turn over? Don't use the electric boot to check, all sorts of things could be going on there.

Hi the kickstart goes down no problem and I can hear the engine turning over (I think) does that mean it hasn't seized ? rightly or wrongly I assume it has gear oil in it as it's just been serviced and the place I used is usually really good in terms of distance traveled I only went about 10 foot if I was lucky thanks Brian

You'll not have done any damage in ten foot Make sure the fuel and ignition are on... We've all done that one! A little bit of choke to help it fire too.

Hi, Don't take this the wrong way but agree with Nick make sure your fuel taps on,open the choke and deffo make sure the keys turned all the way round (2 clicks) I've made the mistake so many times turning the fuel off and starting the engine only to have the engine die after a few meters or not turning the key all the way and kicking the engine over 20-30 times before realising. Obvious things but easy to forget!!!

thanks for all the replies
I paid the shop 260 quid for full service, MOT, amongst other things so I'm gonna get them to look at it as I don't really have a clue what I'm doing
I'll post back with the outcome
cheers Brian

Always a good bet with two strokes to lob in a good plug when they don't start even when a new one was fitted etc etc.
