HI ALL,
FOR A WHILE NOW MY VESPA 125 DISK HAS BEEN RUNNING A LITTLE SLUGGISH WHEN I FIRST TAKE IT FOR A SPIN IF STOOD FOR MORE THAN A HOUR OR SO
AFTER ABOUT 5-10 MINS THE ENGINE PICKS UP AND AWAY I GO.
TOOK THE SCOOT OUT TODAY FOR A GOOD THRASHING 20 MILES OR SO STOPPED AT SOME LIGHTS "ENGINE TICKING OVER NICELY" THE THING JUST CUT OUT
SO AFTER LOOKING A COMPLETE t**t AND WALKING THE THING ACROSS 3 LANES OF TRAFFIC THE ENGINE WOULD NOT START AGAIN???
TOOK THE SPARK PLUG OUT (RECENTLY BROUGHT B7) THE THING WAS WELL AND TRULY CARBON FOULED SO I STUCK ONE OF MY OLD ONES BACK IN (B7) FROM MY SPARES BOX AND IT STARTED STRAIGHT AWAY.
WOULD I BE BETTER USING A B6HS I'VE ONLY BEEN USING A B7 AS THAT'S WHAT CAME WITH THE SCOOT WHEN BROUGHT.
I DON'T DO MUCH SLOW TOWN RIDING , JUST A'LOT OF LONG DISTANCE (FAST RIDING) "I SAY FAST 60MPH IS FAST ENOUGH"
ANY COMMENTS GREATLY RECEIVED . THANKS

how many miles on the clock? could just be piston rings.

THERE'S 23,000 MILES. WOULD IT BE WORTH REPLACING WITH NEW ONES?

Quick walk through....
Loosen the exhaust, both at the cylinder and where the bolt runs through the engine casing underneath. No need to remove this bolt. Remove the lower suspension bolt, drop the suspension. Remove the head cowl (take the spark plug out first) Unfasten the four nuts that hold the head on, and remove the head. Now for the tricky bit... Removing the studs. The usual method is to screw one nut down, then follow it with a second. Use two spanners to lock them up to each other, then use the lower one to unscrew the thread. Once all the studs are out, push the piston down the bore and slide the barrel off. Remove the piston rings - if they're jammed in, then run a feeler gauge slowly round to free them. And then change your oil brand to a better grade! Make sure the grooves in the piston are clean. I usually do this by snapping an old piston ring, then running it through the groove. Any bumps and you'll need to spend a little time digging the crud out. Fill the crank case with clean rag before you start, you don't want that floating round in your engine!
Replace the base gasket
Stick the new piston rings on. Look for the little peg on the piston that locates the ring gap. Gently ease the cylinder over the piston. Do not force it, you'll snap a ring.
Then do the opposite of the above to reassemble.
Keep the revs low for the first fifty miles, then run at progressively higher revs for the following 200.
That should do it.
The worst that can go wrong? Snapping a new ring!

one word of caution, when you try to put the studs back in with the barrel in place, make sure you dont cross thread it,which is hard to judge with the weight of the barrel, ive done it a few times, i now just take out the whole engine to replace the the rings

WHY IS IT NECESSARY TO REMOVE THE STUDS TO CHANGE THE RINGS, CANT THE BARREL JUST BE PULLED UP OFF THE PISTON WITH THE STUDS STILL IN??

you can leave the bottom outside one in, but it's easier to do them all.
To avoid cross threading, clean the threads in the casing with wd40 and on the studs with a fresh nut . Wind the nut on slowly, to check it's not knackered. A bit of low melt grease on the end of the threads and it should be ok.
