Popped into my local scooter shop the other day to try to get a head gasket for my Polini 177. The kit didn't come with one but I had my old head gasket on there instead. Anyway, thought I would try and get the correct one as I was in there. The bloke said that I didn't actually need one on there though as the base of the head was raised to compensate. Fair enough I thought, I'll take your word for it. Now that I have no head gasket the engine backfires slightly and the plug is oily…at least I think it's since I left it off and it's not a coincidence. So, anything to backup my local scooter blokes advise?

Yes, crank ported Vespas don't require a head gasket, and I'm surprised you had one in the first place.
Check your torque settings and timing if you've an issue like that, but if the head was blowing then I'd expect a lean looking plug, not an oily one.
