Hi everyone, a few weeks I sadly came off my px 125 in the ice and it probably was the saddest moment of my life! So now the left back panel has a nice scratch and abit of a dent.
I did take it too the garage but was quoted around £375! Being only 20 years old this is a lot of money so has anybody got any tips of trying to get rid of rust!?
Thanks a lot, jake

hi the easiest way to treat the rust in my opinion is that pro gel also available as pro liquid treatment, you can buy it at decent motor factors also on e bay,, just rub the worst off with wet and dry fine grit paper and brush the rust treatment gel or liquid on the area,, then prime and touch up as required, hope this helps,, steve

Ive used that too exellent stuff, got it in halfords, when youve killed the rust, rubbed to back, primed it, and sprayed it, then you stand back, look at it and either say, not a bad job, or go on line on the scooter graphics website, and order some graphics to hide your paint job.

Sorry to hear of your 'spill'. Yes, it's like the world's caved in when it happens, but it just about happens to all of us and if that's the worst you ever get; well I'm glad you're that lucky. You are still hear to sort it out. Here's the stuff prorust.com/See their saw video ( a video nasty.............. but only because of the condition of that fine tool)!

;D I used to rate Hammerite rust products (and paint), but rather like Nitromors I think that the 'nanny state' has got to the concoctions and it isn't a patch on what it used to be. Same too with Swarfega. Yes, it'd strip the oil out of your hands (Swarfega, not the Nitromors......well it probably would too) but it got your hands clean which was the idea after all. Dermetitis? Yep, have that one on my list. Bad for the environment? Yeah, probably, but while we in the UK are saving the planet the Chinese are now wrecking it so ??

Hi, well I'm glad I am not the only one to become a victim of the ice I also came off and smashed my left rear panel and front mud guard just last week. The quote you got given sounds mega high I have been quoted £70 at my local scooter garage that includes full panel beat and spray. Anyway I'm just using masking tape to stop the rust just until the vespa gets a touch up. You can replace you scooter but not your life ,but it's still mega gutting when you taste the tarmac.

must correct myself, I think the one in my garage is 'kill rust', you rub down with wet and dry, paint it in , and a chemical reaction turns the rust blue and kills it, give it a key with wet and dry and its ready to paint .

I have similar suspicions about Hammerite too, but it remains better than the paint Piaggio put on this one! (I make my own swarfega equivalent though - Cheap hand soap and a spoonful or two of sugar, works just the same and diesn't smell of petrol afterwards... and only costs about a quid)

I tried once to make Swarfega more effective (due to this less good, health and safety based current type). I tried that sugar trick. It all just sank to the bottom!!! I used to use this one www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_175575_langId_-1_categoryId_165711which was pretty good but not as cheap as yours Nik! As a total aside, do you remember Amway Cleaning Products from a few years back? Manily did kitchen cleaners etc & was sold on a sort of 'pyramid' sales basis by 'agents'. Well I was in Portsmouth a couple of days ago on the Quay & saw one of the co-owners of Amways 'toy' at Gun Wharf Quay. Wow, there's money in cleaning products !!!!!

Yes, it does sink, but a bit of agitation mixes it up again.
I forgot my other great hand cleaning discovery too - baby wipes. Try them...

There is big money in pyramid selling, not sure its the quality of Amways products that makes them rich Hammerite, agree, the formula they use now is not as good as the old, bring back nasty oil based chameicals I say! Rust - I use Krust gell A LOT, and also Halfords 'metal restorer' (acid) for de rusting parts you can remove, nuts & bolts etc, eats anything and it's cheap. Hammerite Krust 'convertor' is ok, but it doesnt really do what it says on the tin, it just slows rust down in my experience. I use it on metal I've already removed rust as a last step before primer. Each of the scooters I've restored were entirely painted with it on the bare metal prior to primer. Hammerite anti rust primer is good, a zinc based primer for hand painting prior to top coat, I like it because it goes on thick and smooth and can be sanded very easily, perfect for filling any pitting in something you have just removed the rust from to get a nice surface for paint... ramble over!

Well when I was quoted that much I did find it abit of a joke. But they were going to replace it with a new panel And it needed spraying + labour Etc etc.

That's what they do for insurance quotes. All new stuff etc. I had a Honda part that was scuffed in an accident. It was a small under engine fairing I'd already bought off eBay to colour match to the bike (Mica Yellow). it was my eBay part that got damaged and the original (in silver) was stored carefully in my garage. I said they could have that garaged part back but they said "no, we have to fit a new part". That part from eBay had cost me 5 ukp. The new part from Honda was 118 + vat!!!!
Suggest you let that garage know it was as a cash deal etc rather than an insurance claim & I bet the cost would be a lot lower re-using parts etc..

If it's any help, here's the little Piaggio ET2 as it was when I bought it five weeks ago. Both side panels and the front fairing had a bad case of road rash. I rubbed down the side panel with some 180 grit wet and dry paper, used wet, but not to bare metal because rust converter needs some rust to attach to. Then I painted it with two coats of Rylards Konverta, which is pretty much the same as Kurust. The next day I washed it off, let it dry and sprayed a coat of filler primer on it. Then I rubbed that down. Then I gave it three coats of grey primer, three coats of Peugeot Royal Blue, four coats of Piaggio Midnight Blue (not the original shade but I wanted a two-tone effect) and five coats of lacquer, all out of rattle cans which I had knocking about apart from the Midnight Blue, and all on the same day. It cost me about £12 to do. I know it's far from perfect, I don't have a workshop so had to do it all outdoors and January isn't the best month for painting, but I'm happy enough with the end result.

Et2 et4 are so cheap these days, hard to resist, and with pollution congestion charges and insurance, alot of people are going for electric bikes and selling their peds in london. Or so they say in the ad. Im trying white vinegar bath and wire brush on bolts, and hammerite kurust on panels Not bad for winter paint job, looks pretty straight and clean from here.
